I am doing a 150 mile, 4 day trip in April and most of it is on country roads

I have a Carrera Vulcan and reckon that slicks would be the way forward for this trip , due to the majority being on tarmac

Which tyres can people recommend?

Cheers :)

I have been running 26x1.5 Vittoria Randonneurs everyday on my commuter bike since summer, even did a 140mile trip to Paris (was a relay) for BHF on them. Living in the centre of a city I always seem to ride through bloken glass and have not had a single puncture and they roll for sooo long :D

They sell at Decathlon for £9.99 each, cheap as chips!

Oh and they have reflective side walls :D

I use Schwalbe Marathon Racer 1.5s for commuting. Excellent tyre combining low weight with great puncture protection. Seem to recall they are a bit pricey, but definitely worth checking out.
Scott Scale 20 (for xc racing)
    Gary Fisher HKEK (for commuting)

I run Schwalbe City Jet tyres in 26x1.5" size with tyre liners. Without mentioning the 'p' word, i have found this set up very reliable  for my daily commute for many months now.
  • i'd go for a big slick, I've found mtb can ride a bit funny on really skinny slicks. Something like the tioga skidrow 2.5"

I'm currently running geax booze tyresfor street/roads over winter and if you want to hoon about using speed bumps as launch platforms and think steps are valid shortcuts then they are great  But a less weighty skinner tyre if you aren't as much of an idiot as I am like the conti city contact would be better.

    Mongoose Teocali

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford?

I wouldn't discount semi slicks if you want a little grip along the way and I'd go for a bigger tyre too, you'll appreciate it if the road turns into country lane and gets a little bumpy. I use Michelin XC Hard Terrain at £13 or something, work great in wet too nice generous plump 2.0 tyre.

I've been using Maxxis Xenith 26" x 1.5 and they are fast, but tottaly slick no grip for mud or slightly off road trails at all, also got the vittoria ranndoneur on another bike in 700c size and they are a brilliant commuting/road tyre.

If you want a cheap slick try a Kenda Kommuter MTB Road Tyre 26 x 2.0 - about 12 quid each

BikeRadar seemed to love them in their review, but I struggled to find them in any of the "usual suspect" e-stores...
