Black ice

Particularly bad round here this morning; one section of my commute, which just happens to be the longest and steepest uphill, is never gritted, so I was expecting that to be bad, but consoling myself that I join a bigger road at the top which is usually fine - not today: had to walk downhill for a long way before I found a clear road.
Lost it 4 times on the ice, managed to get off onto my feet on 2 of these but then dropped the bike and fell over on one of those. Offed & walked 3 other times as well, first time I've had to walk anywhere since replacing my old SPDs with proper shoes too, not great.

Good cartoon moment at one point, I managed about 5 turns of the pedals without moving an inch before falling off.

Overall took 1 1/2 hours, with a tailwind that would mean 1 hour or less in summer.

Really can't see why people use turbos.

I had a similar issue this morning going up a small hill, I had CX tyres on and low pressures as well. Managed to get up it, then decided the rest of the road was probably worse (surrounded by fields rather than houses), so turned around and went back down it. Just had a shorter training ride/commute than I wanted.

It got me as well. setting off this morn I thought "There's black ice about, I'll take it easy" and as I thought so my front wheel slid away...

...I rolled out of it unhurt.

There's a Severe Weather Warning in effect for East and West Sussex for tomorrow the 18th. 'Significant Accumilations' ie, 2-4 inches of snow or more, are forcast so no doubt we'll be told to stay home and cower under the stairs until the danger passes. Resilience my ar*e, the nation will come to a shuddering halt again.

I found the first bend I came to on my commute this morning looked a bit shiney, before I could think about it front wheel went and I found myself skidding on my arse.
Luck it was a sof'tish landing, with only minor damage.

Gonna ache a bit later though....

It's just as bad in the car. I slid into the other lane this morning for 4-5 seconds as I hit a patch of black ice on an "A" road. Luckiliy nothing was coming the other way at that moment.

I remember years back on my way to school I skidded on black ice and came off and got a bit of a scrapped arm.....of course being a primary school kid I saw this as an excuse for a day off school and went straight to the medical room when I got to school. Bit of blood and tears always got the teachers alarm bells ringing! Bloody nasty stuff though that black ice!
