...take out a ton of loans from those horrible loan companies that do no credit checks and then fleece people with crazy interest and then leave the country for good for South America....would you?

I'm an honest guy but the chance to stick it to those evil knobends would be a tempting one. How much do you think you could get away with?

    Well, no, it's not.

The money's come from the Bank of England, not a nasty loans company, and the interest won't fleece the people it's being lent to. It will, however, make a sizable return.

People talk about the money that was pumped into the banks as though it's been lost. It hasn't. It was a loan, and interest will be applied. The country is going to, eventually, make a profit out of saving those banks, as well as the short term benefit of preventing the total collapse of the country.

I do always find it amusing how so many people are suddenly experts in economics, when even a cursory look at the figures reveals that they're actually very wrong.

If a government has a surplus, it's doing something wrong. For a surplus to exist, tax revenue must be higher than public service spending. While this would be great for a corporation, it's not for a government, which is supposed to serve the public. It shows that either taxes are too high or not enough is being spent.

I'm not saying that excessive debt's a good thing, ideally the budget would spend all tax revenue, not a penny more or less, but overspend is preferable to underspend. Of course, if you want a surplus to exist, I'm sure nobody would object to you paying more on your tax bills...

My tax bill is already increasing.............

I don't expect a surplus, but I hopped for a pre-budget report that took into account the decisions needed in the short term (agree long term the repayment of loans will benefit us).
