I just want to put on record my thanks and appreciation to Tim Fisher.

Until tonight I had no idea who this gentleman was. Then my PC gave me a message of death on startup:
WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT.

It had a solution of sort: just use Boot CD to repair.

Except that internal CD drive was not working.

So simple: just use an external drive. Just plugging in did not work so realised needed to change boot order. Except all options to access BIOS failed.

Step forward Tim Fisher. This article
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/accessbios.htm is quite simply the best help guide I have ever read about how to fix a PC fault. Quite apart from being incredibly easy to read its hard to imagine how much more comprehensive it could be.

Included in it was the hint that PCs might not recognise keyboards with USB connection. Thank heavens my wife's ancient Dell still has a PS/2 keyboard, I used that and hey presto was able to fix the problem.

I'm posting here just to record joy and general happiness about the goodness of man that someone has made such a great and useful resource available to all.

And to suggest if every you suffer problem with PC (sadly its actually a question of when not if truth to be told) to check out about.com as at least from my experience its pretty dam good.

(PS My wife's computer is in fact a running joke in our house, it's probably the last steam driven one still in existence. I have bought her a brand spanking new (pink) keyboard as an Xmas prestent (see romance isnt dead). I'll still give it her but be sure to keep the old one, just in case).

Looks useful, I've added the shortcut to one of my folders.

    Thanks.

Just a follow up to this. I emailed Tim Fisher to express my thanks and offer to buy him a drink if he passes by. He's just replied to say that this might be a while but suggested I might instead make a donation to http://www.kiva.org

This is an excellent charity and another wonderful example of the good that t'internet can do and I was more than happy to support it.
