I am not that much of a carbon bike guy after one of my friends ended up in an emergency pissing under himself for the next couple of months after his bike giant xtc composite has broken into a few pieces while going down the hill with 60-65km/h on his cateye, therefore...this is my babe I have recently came up with- one of them at least- gave up on carbon parts after the whole story;
The whole thing came up at 9731g (incl. weight of flat pedals, but with no hoses for gear shifters, plus I have updated my rear derailleur with KCNC ceramic pulley wheels (probably I have shaved a few gs). (It would be something around 9760g I guess)- depending on how much the hoses are; looking to do same thing with bottom bracket and hub's bearings- costy, but spotless. Questions and comments welcome. Ahhhh I would have probably gone for one of ZTR's + Extralite Hubs instead of Mavic CrossMax SL if not the fact that I am 86-88kg......plus I am very symetrical- one arsehole only- which I like- carbon seatposts are not an option here; if comes about handlebars- I have already killed FSA K-Force Riser '08 and flat from '09 (latest one)- that is why switched to KCNC stuff- very descent parts- always weight less that they give them: their SC BONE Flat 31.8, 600mm= 120g on my scales; 100mm 31.8 SC WING Stem came up at 97g!!!
less than famous 90mm FSA OS-99= 98g. Up front DT Swiss XR4.2D + DT Swiss Revolution Black 1.8 Spokes, DT Swiss alloy nipples on DT Swiss 240's DISC Front Hub. Mavic CrossMax SL on the back for a bit of extra strength. 27.2 x400mm Ti Kents' seatpost for a bit of springy thingie- a must if you wanna go fast on scandium hardtail frame, otherwise you will feel absolutely everything- needed to switch from SLR Kit Carbonio Selle Italia to same model, but with Ti Rails- because of Carbonio Rails' shape- would not fit- as I have found out for myself Ti does not absorb vibrations as good as carbon, but is way springier (came up only a little bit heavier- Kent's seatpost- 228g on my scale ). Next stage- I hope sometime soon- a new Magura Durin SL 100mm instead of the Marathon 120mm, rear Formula R1 on an Ultralighweight Kit and maybe Extralite Crankset, but I am still thinking about this one. XTR is XTR- never fails plus is stiff as hell.

AT THE END- NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE BIKE IS- IT DOESN'T PEDAL ITSELF :D

Let me know if you see the pics- I just logged in- still in the dark

ooh nice seatpost...think that would look good on mine.
  • thanks for your comments guys- it is very fast and responsive, i'm gonna be selling the rest of them bikes- none of them i have got at the moment comes even close to this beast, plus you feel real safe on this one: good climber, cuts the corners beautifuly- very stiff and... 1519g for 18" frame- cost of frame- around £450- from what i can remember- def good investment

pics dissapeared for some reason- back with some updates- have not been here for a while. Sticked with KENT's straight post (228g)

    IMG_0562-1.jpg

replaced my 688g DT XR 4.2D white limited Edition on DT Swiss 240s 6 hole and DT Swiss Revolution Black

    IMG_0549-1.jpg

and back with front Mavic Crossmax SL (723g) after a while. Been using DT,...set, but they were not as stiff as my previous Mavic 717 Disc,...Had an accident!!!- drunk woman opened her car door with a kick,...- ended up 15m farther with a bus bumper just in front of my face, once I woke up
    IMG_0539-1.jpg

replaced my Magura Marta Magnesium SL '09 (biggest mistake I have made, since building this one up)...

    IMG_0565-1.jpg

    IMG_0577-1.jpg

    IMG_0573-1.jpg

...with my old and best Magura Marta SL GOLD SL '07- some serious, serious shit, best by far...

    IMG_0574-1.jpg

new QRs form KCNC, bought way back

    IMG_0551-1.jpg

they feel a bit floppy compare to stock Mavic Ti, BUT will stick to them for a while. There is a big saving with them

replaced my Controltech Shorties I also have on my TREK 9.9SSL '07 with these
    IMG_0589-1-1.jpg

feel a bit as if you were holding onto a copper pipes, BUT light (really nicely done)

    also bough while back these

    IMG_0944-1.jpg

    not tested yet

    IMG_1089-1.jpg

Extralite granny 22T E came soon after. Could not put them all FRMs for some reason on my new E-Bones W. Extralite were actually the only guys who came up with an explanation to that- I can recommend them. FRM's guys were actually instead of advicing on what might be the cause of that, defending themselves,...

    IMG_0997-1.jpg

    eventaually, this came into being

    IMG_1090-1.jpg

not tested yet- will be doing it soon. Had some probs with my Crossmax SLs- bearings fell apart. Bought some hybrids from BOCA BEARINGS- they look and work sweet. By far the best of them all bearings I ever bought.

In the meantime I have tried Fox F120RLC, but the fork felt not as siff as my previous Magura Durin 120 '09, while being heavier. Magura Durin Marathon 120- 1567g + 48g Remote weight. Really stiffer- one bad thing about Durin Marathon- the very moment Temperature reaches 10 degrees of Celcius or below, Oil comes through the washers- not that problematic to me- does not affect brakes pads- need to keep an eye on it, though

    IMG_0584-1.jpg

    IMG_0599-1.jpg

and a view on a bike (with no E-Bones on yet). Crankset looks a bit anorexic, the new one (Extralite E-Bones W, 175mm= 621g while XTR FC-M970= 792g for 177.5mm arms)- as soon as I test it, will put on some comments- looks lovely, though. Still thinking whether to look at it or use it on the "field". That is it for now. Ahhhhhhhh- bike came up at 8996g PLUS flats (NC-17 Trekkings= 246g) making it total 9212g

    no cranks on, yet

    Wow.

I've read that first post a few times now and still have no idea what it says!

I'm a big fan of the Kula platform (see below for shameless plug  )...
but had to have mine resprayed because I find the colour schemes are real assaults on the eyeballs.

You've got some nice kit on the bike but there's just just too much going on for my liking.

Less is more my friend, less is more.

agreed with that less is more- not enough time to play with sanding and painting, though...otherwise would have gone for black ano- from the other hand...chicks dig it :D

I have seen your post as well while back- cool rig. how much have you paid for re-spaying?

As for the first part of my ad- pics dissapeared, don't know why- I have seen couple of carbon frames snap- I have previously used TREK 9.9SSL- cracks showed up here and there: mostly BB shell and bottom parts of chainstays- gave up. At the time could not fing any other SC butted ones- this one came from States- no other colours available

I got mine shot-blasted and powder-coated by a local company for around £40. No hours spent sanding and painting for me - I just whipped everything off the frame and handed it over to the good folk at 'Bettablast' (highly recommended, by the way). They did all the work and I had it back within a couple of days. The results are well worth being without your bike for a couple of days.

yeah, I know- was trying to get ones not that eye catching- cannot convince myself to SPDs and these are only 246g, so it is not that bad

Any flats would look wrong, you should try clipless ;-)

Lovely bike! I have the Kula Deluxe version. Same frame but nowhere near as good as yours!

What is the current weight? You going to race it in any XC races?
Constantly trying to upgrade my parts. It is a long road ahead as things are so expensive for little gain. n+1 is always the principle in my mind.

WAS :) 8996g PLUS flats 246g (NC-17). Just sold the frame- and am now taking it all apart- new baby arrived this morning.

I do not do XC races- was a pro swimmer but broke my ankle years back having clipless on- that is why all my bikes now have flats- scared shitless of 'em now
