1st Post Alert!!

Hi everyone.

I'm off to LLandegla for the day between Christmas and New Year. A group of us are going and are planning to do the red & black trail in the morning and then go 'off piste' in the afternoon and explore the local area (XC). Can anyone advise me as to what is nearby. I don't want to load the bikes back up and go off to Marin Trail or Coed Y Brenin (????) and would rather just go off somewhere very close to the Llandegla Trail Centre.

Anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks.

Carl.

There is actually quite a bit of good riding to be had around the Llandegla area. There is the 'mast route' which you can add as an extension to the Llandegla trail. If you fancy some intense up and downs check out Llantysilio mountain which is also rideable from the trail centre.

There is also some good cross country riding to be had in the Clwyds about 1/2 hour drive away...

What Stu said or if the weathers not too brutal: get the 1:25k landranger map, start early and you can one of my local fave rides (taking in the trail centre at llandegla).

Ditch your car near wrexham general station and get a train to ruabon, from there after a couple of km climb on backroads you can head right over the top of the mountain (exposed), skirt the top of worlds end and come out near the highest point at Coed llandegala, so miss the first long climb!

Do the red/black down to the car park and then one of three (long or short or escape route depending how much daylights left and how many more muddy descents you want) routes back to your car. Escape route is straight down the road but the others are a right old mix of quarries, fireroad, old railways, bridleways, cyclepaths, public access, shady footpaths and bits of road as you head back into civilisation.

Say, 3-4 hrs to ruabon to llandegla, 1.5 hrs in the trail centre and 0.5-2 hrs back to wxm depending on which way you go and whether you stop for a pint/dry off by the fire.

Let me know if you want some extra detail, the only tricky route finding bits are after you leave the car park at the trail centre, linking up the bits of track to avoid spending time on the roads but it does go ok.
