well, he got a mension. i am, of cource refering to SPOTY, steve peat got a mension in one of those pic gallery/music/comentry compolation things, but, while i realise its a small sport, for a WORLD CHAMPION! and a legend of the sport, with an incredible story, who has done soo much for the sport, and for other charities and the like, to not get some kind of proper award, or at least a proper mension, for more than about 4 seconds, esp as it was held in his own town, well, i think its kinda rubbish....

I loved the bit about "he flies to the top" - Fail!

I mean how hard was it - He flies off the top? He fliesfrom the top, He flies down the drop?
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

  • I admire Steve Peat, not being into downhilling but purely xc i was very happy for him this year. I have a feeling tho that his name/pic was only brought up due to the event being in Sheffield. Small (very) discipline of cycling and i personally hoped Cavandish didnt win it, great acheivment and all but wasnt unexpected. Congrats to Giggsy who is probably more expected to get lifetime acheivment sooner than later. He still puts in the work and has become a legend so deserves the award while he is still at the very top of his game.

He flew to the top of his sport... Could just be that.

  • I'm chuffed for Giggs winning it (and I'm not a Man U fan). I thought Button would get it.

It's a bit of a swansong award for Giggs (as was the Player of the Yeard award he got) but you've got to admire his talent and contribution year on year and I'm glad he's been honoured for it.

Still would have liked to see Peaty with a nomination though.

(Ennis is cute though but WTF with the hair?)

Surely though it's about Sports Personailty of the Year. What has Giggs done this year, other than win PFA Player of the Year? I could understand it if he'd been up for a lifetime achievement award but he hasn't exactly shined this year. For my money it was Jenson Button all the way, maybe with Jessica Ennis as an outsider, but no way Ryan Giggs. Why did Andy Murray even get a mention? What has he won lately? What has Bradley Wiggins won? And whoopee sh!t, Philips Idowu won a gold for chucking himself in a box of sand at the umpteenth billion attempt. I'd rather David Haye had won it, at least he acheived something albeit against something that may even not be entirely human.

But again, you've go to look at the sport - downhill mountain biking isn't exactly mainstream (and long may it remain so) when you compare it to the likes of football, cricket, rugby, even athletics and F1.

And not wanting to belittle Peaty's acheivements but he's a bit of a latecomer. How long's he been trying, 16 years? Yet he's only just won a World Championship?

We seem to have a thing about celebrating second-placers and didn't-he-do-wells in this country. It's about time we started celebrating winners - winning is everything, coming second or trying hard isn't good enough. The Yanks and the Aussies have got it right on this one.

If we start looking for winners, then maybe, just maybe, the Peatys of this world will get the recognition they deserve.

Think that's kind of the point though - it's a great story him finally achieving the one title that has eluded him for so many years, rather than Ryan Giggs 'man who has always been really successful at football but a bit dull is successful again'

Ah the tired old Britain loves losers argument! Take a look at the top 10 at SPOTY and 6 were world champions. Of the 4 that are not: Giggs plays, much as it pains me to say it, in one of the top teams in the world (arent they technically world club champions). Cav is by definition a winner. Murray bottled the big ones agreed but he is top 3-4 in a sport where there are thousands of competitors at world level and he won a host of tournaments across the year. Strauss captained an Ashes winning side. So you're point doesnt have much mileage here does it?

Yes it does, you've just showed that!

Only 5 out of the 10 were world champions - Haye, Idowu, Tweddle, Button, Ennis.

Bradley Wiggins is not a current World Champion (unless the track championship is valid for two years); neither is Cavendish, Murray, Giggs or Strauss.

So why not include five others who were? Why are we elevating non-winners or second placers to an equal level? I'm sure if we tried ahrd enough we could find another 5 current British world champions.

Always worth getting your facts straight eh? Wiggins wasnt among the 10 but Tom Daley, world diving champion was. And I think my post demonstrated why the other 4 could be considered winners by any definition of the word and each of them compete in sports with a worldwide participation (except Strauss who I agree could have been excluded).

Including Peat, Phil Taylor and other more obscure world champions would ultimately be pointless given the status of these sports.

  • Has anyone ever seen Peaty get to the top? Maybe he does actually fly...

I've seen him going up Heart-Attack Hill in Wharny...and he almost flies. The guy is no slouch, that's for sure.
