I've been doing my engineering maths work for the past 4 hours, decided to have a break and now my brain has gone to sleep :roll:
need help with one question that has been doing my head in:

If four hammers and 3 chisels cost £33
and six hammers and 2 chisels cost £38

what is the price of 1 hammer and 1 chisel.

I can imagine it being fairly easy hence the reason why it doing my head in. :evil:
All help appreciated :)

    (1)4h + 3c = 33 so 8h+6c = 66
    (2)6h + 2c = 38 so 18h +6c = 114

    (2)-(1)= 10h = 48 so one hammer is £4.80
    4x(4.80) + 3c =33
    19.2 + 3c =33
    3c = 13.8
    so one chisel is £4.60

    Ok

    6h (hammers) +2c (chisels) = 38 or
    3h +c = 19 therefore
    c = 19 - 3h

    Now use the first equation and substitute c

    4h + 3c = £33.00 then
    4h +3 x (19-3h) = £33.00
    4h + 57 - 9h = £33.00
    -5h = -£24.00 or 5h = £24.00
    h = £24.00/5 = £ 4.80 then
    6 x £ 4.80 +3c = £33.00
    3c = £33.00 - £28.80
    3c = £ 13.80
    c = £13.80/3 = £ 4.60

    8)

    Somebody will probably tell me it's wrong now :roll:

    When I was in the middle of failing higher maths, I asked "When will I ever want to use this nonsense in the real world anyway". Now I know :lol:

    someone should post one of these type of things regularly, that was quite a pleasant mental excercise. wish i could have paid as much attention whilst actualy at school.
  • my housemates as a joke asked me some year 6 sat maths questions. I couldnt answer them :(

    i didnt have a clue what prime numbers were. and the 1 question i could answer i got so excited i missed out part of it and they laughed. oh how they laughed. cruel.

    Here's one for you then sheepsteeth..
    The frictional force F newtons and load L are connected by the law F = aL = b, when F = 6.0 N, L = 7.5N and when F = 2.7 N, L = 2.0N

    Calculate the value of a and b

    Got a few more maths questions if anyone can help?
    Ive handed one in twice and cant seem to get it right :? Here it is:

    You are required to fabricate a triangle with an area of 1.92M2, if the height is 1.6m longers than the base what are the dimensions of the triangle?

    Cant seem to get my head around this for some reason!

    Area of a triangle is half it's base x its height

    A = 1/2bh

    This triangle's height is 1.6 x bigger than it's base

    h = 1.6b

    Substitute that in...

    A = 0.8b^2

    A = 1.9

    1.9 = 0.8b^2

    b = 1.54m

    h = 1.6b

    h = 2.47m

    I may have misunderstood the question...

    If h is 1.6m longer than b, then b is 1.31m and h is 2.91m. If h is 1.6 times longer than b, then the previous is right.

    If h is 1.6m longer, the method's a bit longer, so PM me if you need it.

    Ok, for all you smartarses, some year 9 (age 13/14) questions:
    if 1cm is approx 0.395 inches, how many cubic cm's are there in a cubic foot? give your answer in standard form.

    next one coming soon....

    the diameter of mars is 6.79 x 10(to the power of)6. two man made satelites circle mars at diffent altitdes and a t different velocities.They are circling at 150km and 260km above the surface of mars. what is the minimum and maximum possible distances between the 2 sattleits?

    May aswell add another and see if anyone wants a challenge?

    Total surface area of a cylinder is given by a formula. Find the value of r when A = 1.75m2 and H = 40cm

    That's such an awful question I refuse to answer it. Slap your teacher for me.

    Minimum is 260-150 = 110km (one directly above the other)

    Maximum is 260 + 150 + 6790 = 7200km (opposite sides of the planet)

    well you got the second one right :P
    the first one was 922.9290178, or in standard form, 9.229290178 x 10to the power of 2, i don't see why it's a stupid question :?
