im peed off at buckling back wheels when out training. im 12st 10, so not a complete bat fastard, but they keep going when i sprint or do a short sharp burst. they either just buckle, or spokes will ping!!!

im guessing the best option is mavic open pro??? but with what spokes? ive got an ultegra hub i could use?

cheers

Use double butted spokes, 2.0/1.8/2.0 mm. Those are the standard spokes which most wheelbuilders will use by default - by DT or Sapim usually. There are narrower spokes available, which are durable enough but difficult to build with. Your existing hub will be fine as long as it is laced in the same pattern that it's been before (the tensioned spokes will make visible marks in the hub flange). Open Pro are as durable as I'm aware of, in available rims.

Beyond this, it's the quality of the wheelbuild that matters most. If you're mechanical and interested, I suggest you buy a copy of "The Bicycle Wheel" and make them yourself. Otherwise, you could risk a local wheelbuilder, or order from one of the popular builders mentioned on this forum - Harry Rowland, Paul Hewitt, and a couple of others.

If you want to re-use your hubs, then you're stuck with 36 spokes. I think that's a good thing. Just make sure your mate relaces the hubs the same way they were before (but he'll know to do this).

Sapim, DT are the most common, though you might see ACI or others. I don't think the brand matters much these days. You want stainless steel, double butted spokes, with brass nipples.
