Lovely sunny day yesterday, so I thought I would make a break from putting the Christmas decorations up and go for a ride. It ended up being the most pointless ride i have ever had. I went out along a canal path as a way of getting to some better riding, trouble is I never got that far. I fixed the first 3 punctures in the back wheel, then looked at my front and that was flat too. Had to turn around and come back, as I was out of patches. Ended up carrying the bike the last half mile as both tyres were completely flat. I have started fixing them this morning and found 12 holes in total, and most of the thorns were still in the tyres too.

I am using Bonty mud x with maxxis super lightweight tubes....if ever there was a case for using a tubeless kit, then I think this is it!

wow how unlucky! :? the bonty mud x are usually ok for puncture, odd :?

Yer go tubeless! no punctures and can run low pressures :D

I spent nearly 10 quid each on those lightweight tubes, so they are staying in. Although now, with all the patches they won't be so light

yer thieve probably put some decent weight on  tbh though that could be the reason for the flats...

Its because of those damn council people cutting back those hedges and the spines going everywhere. Its SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO annoying.

I think a thorn will puncture even the thickest of tubes, some of them were rear bad ass, so It's not worth blaming the tubes.

On a road bike ride a few years ago, we had to carry the bikes 12 miles, because the bloody hedges had been trimmed  .

    Bummer...

But did you check the tyre each time to see if the cause of the puncture had been removed?

had a similar experiece over the last 3 weeks with a front tyre.... every weekend the damn front was flat. Didn't occur to me to check all thorns had been removed before I repaired the tyre. Doh!

Yup my back tyre had 5 punctures in it. I was lucky though, I could get home.

i feel lucky, only had a max of 3 on any ride. tubeless may be the way to go mate, having to walk the bike home sucks!

Are you sure you didn't get shot at with a shot gun?

  • you do know that you have to remove the thorns from your tyres before fixing the tubes? if you say that the thorns are still embedded in your tyres then it will be totally pointless fixing the puncture.
before fixing any puncture, you must know what caused the puncture in the first place and cure the problem before the repair, be it embedded thorns, rim tape problems etc.
if you have pinch flats or bursting due to over inflation then its pointless to inflate the tyre to the same pressures because you will get the same problems.
i admire your preservance however, if i had that many punctures then my bike will probably end up in the canal

I've been running hutchinson anti puncture (self sealing) tubes and recently changedtyres, turns out there were six thorns in my back tyre and it hadn't lost any pressure :D Well worth the effort and weight.
My swampy was like a hedgehog on the inside :o it took ages pushing the things out with pliers.

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford?
  • sorry i can't feel your pain over the smugness of my tubeless setup :P

    sucks to be you :P
  • your cursed....

I read this thread then decided to go out for a ride, only to find both tires are flat from my ride yesterday.

First punctures since i got the bike around 2 years ago. And i cant be arsed to sort it out now, was going to go to dalby tomorrow as well :(

What pain is that then? Self sealing tubes work great for me and cost less and are less messy than tubeless for me.
