Speed dials had adjustable cable pull. With the dial screwed all the way in you had a pair of levers for use with old cantilever brackes or calliper brakes, with the dial screwed to the other end of the adjustment you had a set of levers with the right amount of cable pull for v brakes.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
So you can actually control the amount of cable pulled by the levers, and for example
you can make a mechanical disc brakes to grab instantly or to have more progresive feeling.
Am I right?
