Has anyone been listening to the almost racist tirades recently from Petrie Hosken and James Whale on LBC? It's just not on. Funny thing is they wouldn't take my call to big-up cyclists and question why they never have a ranting phone-in about dangerous motorists - you know... the sort that kill people with their metal boxes. Talk about picking on a minority group!javascript:emoticon(':(')

I don't know about LBC, but when I was driving down the M6 from the North a few weeks ago and tuned in to Radio Birmingham, I was taken aback by some of the anti-cyclist statements made by one of their presenters. He was talking to a female studio guest about some other topic and the conversation drifted on to her saying she sometimes cycled, and he let loose on an anti-cyclist tirade. I could almost hear the woman squeam with embarassment. I didn't catch his name.
  • James Whale is just a *****. I stopped listening to him many years ago.

Sorry if my statement has upset any of his fans

Steve Allen has quite bad views on cyclists as well.

Thinks it's funny to blast his horn at passing cyclists :x

That's saddly true. A couple of months ago, I heard another "cheeky" (*) anti-cyclist feature on Absolute Radio by Christian O'Connell. I was quite dissapointed and a bit hurt b/c I love that station and the breakfast show. I was soooo mad that, while getting my cycle gear together to go to work, I texted them calling them bastards. They called me and put me on air!!! :P

(*) the "cheekiness" was a call-in with ideas for a "cyclists only highway code". I explained to them it's not funny when cyclists are dying on the roads.

I went off absolute for similar reasons. Though it wasnt about cycling, just their DJs in general being t*ss*rs. I listen to classic FM now.

Discovered Arrow Rock on digital this morning - will stick with that as it doesn't have DJ's or adverts to annoy me, pretty much like having a very long MP3 playlist on :D

So many TV and radio presenters feel they have to shock to be entertaining.

Let's face it, nobody loves us.

  • So did LBC news cover the latest London cycling fatality (died of her injuries last Thursday) ? Did they fark! How can it be right that ''journalists'' don't cover the stories but feel entitled to carry out their ranty phone-in nonsense? Shirk Jerks.

    some cyclists are pants though.
  • ...like some radio stations.

All they are doing is focussing the underlying unhappiness of their audience -- not unlike the Daily Mail -- which thus keeps their attention long enough to force feed them crap adverts.

I remember when radio was a beautiful distraction from life's foibles. But you're right there.

Mmmmm..., I find them basically pretty decent. But then, I'm a radio junkie, if the DJ is good, I'm hooked. And Absolute (ex Virgin Radio for those not familiar with commercial radio), is now what Virgin was when it started in 1993. More rock and great DJ's.

A good DJ can make such a difference! I remember the Russ & Jono breakfast show (I even lost a job because of it!!), Pete & Geoff (hilarious) and now Christian, who I do like, except for that day. OK, sometimes he p***s me off, but that, for me, is what radio is all about.

I do listen to Radio 2 also, Bob Harris especially. What a voice and what a great taste in music he has. And a committed love for it, too! :)

I suppose I stopped listening to radio as much when JohnPeel died. That man was a legend (and how anyone can mistake him for Harris I have no idea, LOL)
  • Do you think these stations pick on cyclists because they're a minority group?

We can't effect the radio station if we stop listening as we're small in number, and also the station is not likely to lose advertising revenue... whilst providing "entertainment" for the majority group (motorists and cyclist-haters)?
Conversely, if they focussed on dangerous motorists, then they would be slagging of a "majority group" that really could effect their listening and advertising figures if they really pissed them off.

Funny thing is - the day after Mr Whale was doing yet another tirade against bike riders, he was promoting a Cannondale bike competition! Bet Mr Cannondale wasn't too pleased with LBC's selection of presenter and programme for their bike give-away. http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/images/ ... nfused.gif
  • Good point, ridelikeapro, though cyclist-bashing has probably also become more pronounced simply because there are an increasing number on the roads and because motoring - at least in cities - has become progressively more unpleasant. Cyclists have gone from fringe to whinge - from being unnoticed to being a scapegoat to fulminate about.
  • Is it really appropriate and respectful to use a man's violent death to air one's ignorance and prejudice? Is it potentially illegal to slag off cyclists after mentioning Gary Mason's death? Prejudging any investigation by suggesting he was at fault?

    Pisses me right off.

LBC is Daily Mail by radio.

Its nice to listen to as a form of comedy.
  • Is James Whale still alive?
    Giant Escape M1....
    Penny Farthing
    Unicycle
    The bike the Goodies rode
    Pogo Stick
Donkey on Roller skates.......OK I'm lying, but I am down to one bike right now and I feel bad about it,
  • Try listening to Robert Elms on BBC London 94.9, he's very pro-cycling :D

Last week he was talking about doing a weekly Saturday morning slot about cycling as well!
  • I think its quite easy for the bigger city DJ's ie in london to have a snipe at cyclists.

The number of times i was nearly hit by a cyclist walking to work, e.g. using a crossing or traffic lights was pretty much a weekly occurence. Have that over 7 years and even i lost my rag with one person on a bike who was on a proper mission. Thing is, if he had of hit me then i dont think either of us would have been in a very good state after.

That doesnt excuse the constant sniping though...which i agree is just because we are seen as an easy target. Or because if we bite back, then out comes the rediculous 'green' argument.
i.e. "think you're going to save the planet?" type comments.
Its Italian, its carbon.....and some lanky tool rides it.
  • its always the minority that fook it up for the majority.

    motons and cyclunts.

i gave up speaking to cyclists who i nearly rode into cos they ran the red light. i got sick of the torrent of abuse when i asked why thye did it when cycling pressure groups spend so much time trying to dispel the myth.

there are idiots on both sides. i try and ignore them now
Veni Vidi cyclo I came I saw I cycled
