first time ever and it was humiliating - even had van drivers blaring their horn at me and making pedal motions with their hands laughing hysterically -

was ditchling beacon on a 48 - 15 fixie tho with miles from london in my legs.

    Gears are great :D
  • Ditchling on a 48/15?! No wonder you couldn't do it! Though there a lot harder hills around Dicthling is still far from easy! Fair play for attempting it!

I think this is what he was waiting for

Sounds bl00dy insane to me(though never seen Ditcyhling in real life) 8)
  • was there on that bike out of ignorance rather than anything else - usually only ride around london on my fix - knew going uphill was hard but had never really thought that a track bike might have a gear ratio so hard to ride on lumpy roads

    Loon 48 x 15........

I ride 44 x 16 in Manchester - can do Cheshire on it OK, but it's the getting home that's a problem.....have to switch to 44 x 17 ideally..... certainly no good for the Peaks........
  • Did the same thing a couple of years ago on a hill near to where my mum lives in Hampshire. I live near the Yorkshire Dales and never take my fixed over there, but the dales dwarf the Hampshire hills and can be hard enough with gears. I thought there wasn't a hill in Hampshire I couldn't crack on any bike. Wrong.

You are totally finished as a cyclist. LOL! Never mind, we all have bad days...

48:15 on the Beacon! I was told that the pros can manage with 53:23. I tried once earlier this autumn, with success; I was using bottom gear, 34:27, most of the way and I had relatively fresh legs. For us hackers Ditchling Beacon will always be a challenge.
