  • I've got 14 bikes and the following range of chainsets:

    52/46
    52/42
    50/38
    50/36
    48/34
    52/42/32
    50/36/24

you tell me what is 'standard' and what is compact?

    It is a stupid question!

Triple (presumably compact + small ring) on my Giant. Standard 53/39 and 12/25 on my Olmo. The Giant is a bit lighter and considerably faster.

    A triple is a standard with a 30...

I am a man and therefore run a 42/53 with an 11-21 casette at the back, all campag.

    Pfft, cadence.

A high cadence is for those without the balls to push a proper gear (see LA)

    I'm also a man:

    Forget about the tripple - it's all about the quadrouple chainset. 54 / 53 / 52 / 51 for me. The 51 is for emergencies if I ever encounter a 33% climb.

nolf - what do you use the 21t sprocket for?

Just get a 9-speed cassette full of 11t sprockets if you're a real man.
No need for a 12 - it just forces you to go slower than 75 kph. :?

    Srampagmanolo for me though.

    Training / winter bike = compact 50 /34
    Road Race bikes = 53 /39, 52 / 39
    TT bike = 54/46

If I lived somewhere less hilly, and didn't ride the hilliest sportives, it would be a standard. However I live in the South Lakes and tend to head for the hills of the Lakes and Dales on longer rides. 25% hills are much more palatable with a compact.
At the moment I'm doing a lot of training on a fixed wheel bike, as that makes the rolling terrain more interesting.

I change them as and when required on both my training and road bike, 53/39+26/13 and 50/34+11/25
  • Standard on both bikes. 11-23 for racing, 12-25 for training.

Do you actually use that ratio Nolf?

  • Winter/training - 48/34
    Racing - 53/39

Yep. For example a 50/34 with an 11-25 has a BIGGER top gear than a 53/39 and 12-25.

  • Winter ride 48/39 with a 12-27 (Shim 105)

Summer ride 53/39 with an 11-25 (SRAM Force)

Poll is missing triple option which if had to choose only 1 would be choice.

Also depends on country: here by and large a standard, abroad a triple.

+1 for stupid poll as it depends what events you ride and where.
I use compact and normal for racing with different ratios as the compact allows for closer ratios on the rear and still low enough to use in long european sportives.
  • Well if its a stupid poll why have you wasted your time in replying?????

I havent asked what cassete you use with it have i i simply asked what chainset you prefer!

One thing i have noticed for this short peiod on this forum is how many tw4ts there are! Ive never known so many people up their own arses and so belittling.

If its a pointless poll like i say why bother posting or reading on it! you just make yourselves sound like a knob. I shall be removing myself from here as i do not want to be around guys who regard them selves far higher than they actually are!

Thanks for the few guys that gave decent answers and Happy cycling for those who have their feet on planet earth!

Now how do you remove yourself from this forum??? admin???
  • Shut your door on the way out.
I suggest removing yourself from the site by way of a large catapult

    Bye.

it's been going on for years....

surely you remember the old bank holiday battles between mods (on compact) and rockers (on standard)...?? ;)
  • Yep, it may come across as rude but i think that's just the way some people interpret things. Everyone loves a bit o' banter, well i do 8)

I know. put out a poll, and then get all picky when we all start bantering, woohoo. he could have done worse, done a campag/shimano poll or LA/AC poll. Oh the innocence. :P

So, moderators, I can't help but notice that my post was removed. Your action kinda reinforces the point I was making, by the way. A personal message would've been nice.

I really do think that people on this board should try to talk to others in the same way that they talk to each other in real life. Otherwise you end up with this train crash of a thread, and it isn't the first time it has happened.

I suspect most people would have said it was a stupid question if asked in "real life" as well to be honest. On the poll for crank length the same poster basically said he didn't care what the answer was so why bother asking?
