Bike Racks

Can anyone give any advice on what's the best type of rack to go for?
I've got a Scott CR1 and I'm a bit concerned about using any of the roof mount racks that clamp around the down tube as I don't want to wreck my frame.
Chucking it in the boot isn't an option as I've got to ferry the kids & wife about too for some of the events I've entered next year

I've got an 02 Vauxhall Astra so I'm not convinced that the likes of the Saris Bones will work too well plus I reckon I'd need to go down the road of lighting boards which seems like a bit of faffing around.

I've got both options you are not sure about here.

I have two roof mounted carriers that clamp on the downtube and I have not had any problems with my carbon frame road bike (Specialized Roubaix). I spoke to the LBS where I bought the bike and they thought it would be fine. Just don't clamp it really hard - you don't actually have to anyway with my rack (Atera Giro from www.roofbox.co.uk - good website).

I also have the Saris Bones 3 bike rack, and again I have carried my Roubaix on that without problems (even on my MX-5!). The Saris Bones is adjustable enough that you could probably avoid the need for lighting boards. Any decent shop will let you try one out first - just head down with your bike and test it.

In all cases, it is best to rap some soft material (cloth or duster type thing) round the frame at any contact points.

i've got a saris bones and think its spot on. if you want a rof rack get one that clamps on the forks and a sparate wheel rack.
