I was looking on line at bikesdirect.com to get my first road bike from and I have narrowed it down to a couple... I was curious about your thoughts - mainly, are womens specific frames really all they are cracked up to be or are they just a money making ploy?

http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/win ... kirkIX.htm - i lean towards this cause of the price the high end components and it has carbon.

http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/mot ... gi_pro.htm  -  I lean towards this is is it womens specific geometry so it will likely be more of a comfortable fit - it has some carbon not all.

Would love your feedback!

Thanks

  • 1st one is aluminium frame with carbon fork, looks pretty good spec for the dosh though.

2nd one has aluminium frame but with carbon seat stays and fork so more carbon, also seems pretty good spec, that said never heard of either, sorry
  • I'd go and try them, the fit is pretty crucial to a good first road bike experience. I would always buy my first bike from a physical shop, even at a slight premium, just so i can get good support and a properly fitting bike.

Can't go wrong at the price, assuming it's all legit of course, and you don't get whacked for import duty. Bogstandard frame, ten a penny.

It's my understanding that WSD can be a bit of a money making ploy by bike firms. A mate of mine was looking at getting a bike for his wife, and commented that WSD bikes seemed to come with worse groupsets than similar non-WSD bikes at a similar price.

IMO - the most important thing it getting a bike to fit you. Unless you are a very petite woman, there should be a unisex frame to meet your needs. Then you can spec it with WSD bits like the saddle, bars (if necessary), etc.

Get yourself along to an LBS and get a couple of test rides in. Maybe some WSD and some non-WSDs. Then see how you feel about them.
