well, living less than a mile from Diggle I have to say I've never heard of this!
Looking at the map though, I know this stuff well. It's very straightforward. Mostly old railway tracks and tarmac/unmade roads. The final descent (from around 9.5 miles - once you cross the A62 at Standedge) is very smooth and fast (was 'sanitised' recently unfortunately) and brings you out at one of the best pubs in the area
Basically should be a fun and relatively dry low-tech blast. enjoy!0 -
Sound's good thanks singlespeedexplosif hopefully i can get out Saturday and get back home ok as i dont have any lights yet yet !!!!!0

You riding from Hudds?0

Yep getting the train in hopefully to Greenfield station and using it as a start\stop point and then getting the train back again depends on what the other half has planned for me tho  .
I will also be printing the map and directions with me.0 -
Thinking about it if i get in earlier enough i should be ok anyway.0

if you've got a bit of time, why not ride from Marsden up to Standedge? Save you a small fortune on train fare (most expensive 3 miles of track in the country etc)..plus good fun riding too.
If you see a bunch of 5 blokes on bikes looking somewhat the worse for wear, that'll be us. We'll be on a chunk of that route during a stag-do biking pub crawl0 -
Biking pub crawl sounds a good idea will def consider the Marsden up to Standedge dont wanna do too much havent been on the bike in ages   :oops:0

Fair dos. It's a fair old climb but obviously a good downhill at the end of the day
Aye looking forward to it. Ridiculous amount of pubs on the route. And hipflasks too. Ouch. Thank god it's muddy. Nice soft landing...0 -
I rode this route this morning and it's a belter. It had rained over night which meant a covering a grit all over the ride and bike and made the down hill bits over the rocks tricky to say the least.
Starting from the car park just across the railway bridge from the Diggle Hotel you cover about a mile on tarmac before dropping onto an unmade track before picking up the penine bridleway into Greenfield.
Climbing up to Saddleworth Golf Club on road you then climb on track before going over to the Woolpack in Dobcross ready for the first real climb.
Head up the Dobcross memorial before going up to Harrop Edge on pretty rough track with loose stones/cobbles, a total climb of 130m. You then drop down to Castleshaw Reservoirs.Watch out for the road at the end of the initial descent as you come up on it pretty quick. At the reservoirs you make a right into a lung busting final climb up Standedge of some 140m, starting on tarmac before ending on rough track.
The final descent back to the Diggle Hotel is initially over grass/path before crossing the main road and following the bridleway this time over very rough stone which will have you on the brakes all the way to the pub.
we did it in 1hr 45m.0
