My bike and upgrade questions and stuff

Hey peoples!

I got into mountain biking last summer and have been having loads of fun rocking it up on the Felt Q520 that I got (it was recommended to me at my local Evans) but Christmas is coming and i can't help but see all this really snazzy kit around!

Anyhow, I've been loving riding fairly aggressively and am liking stuff with gravity on my side the most, but don't mind a slog uphill every now and then, so was wondering:

"IF" I were to upgrade any parts of my bike what would be the best bits to do first? Would it be worth it or should I ride this bike into the ground and get a new one?

As I'm full of questions at the moment, a few others are:

What size tires can I run on my bike? (I have the stock 2.1 on at the moment)

Although I realise this is an XC bike, will it take a fair amount of punishment anyway (and I'm not talking massive drop offs, just rough stuff)?

Everything on the bike is stock at the moment.

Thanks in advance! x

  • Rolling weight and suspension would always be my first upgrade tbh. And maybe full length gear outers. Even Alivio shifters and mechs work ok if crap can't get in there.
I'm too lazy to even Google your bike tbh, but they're always the first areas I look at.

Dot 4 in the eye hurts. Trust me
  • Looking a the Q520 spec on Evans' website I'd look at the following:
Brakes, the Q520 has cable discs, I'd ceetainly look at replacing them with hydraulic squeezers, perhaps Avid JUicy 3.5s or equivalent.
The forks on yours are Suntour XCT-MLO, so perhaps a decent set of 100mm Lockout forks would compliment the handling.
Other than that, phased upgrade of any compnent that wears out or fails...
  • Wheels/Tyres
    Forks.
    Brakes.
    Chainset.

In that order. Wheels/tyres and forks will make the most difference to how a bike rides IMO.

Brakes and chainset can be changed when things wear out.

Personally I'd look to be keeping the felt as a hack bike, save some cash and buy another better equipped "off the shelf" bike.
  • Forks and what bigben says
