Shimano Cassette For New Wheel

I'm thinking of buying a cheap rear wheel purely so that I can put an indoor trainer specific tyre on it and easily swap it out with the wheel I would use for training sessions on the road.

I currently have an Ultegra chain set - would I need to get another Ultegra cassette for my new cheap wheel or could I get away with something cheaper e.g. a Tiagra or 105 cassette without wrecking the chain? The chain at the moment is an HG93 and I'm wondering whether this affects my choice of cassette?

Thanks

As long as it's the same speed, SRAM or Shimano cassettes would work fine.

  • WHS ^^^^^^ it`s gotta be the same speed of cassette (ie if your bike is 10 speed you will need a 10 speed cassette for the trainer wheel, there isn`t a 10 speed Tiagra cassette so it`s gotta be 105 or Ultegra, or DA if you`re feeling flush  )

  • Thanks for the info - I have a 9 speed Ultegra setup at the moment and had assumed that I'd needed to buy a 9 speed cassette to match.

I was also worried about possibly having gear indexing issues when swapping between wheels, but I gather this isn't an issue as long as you have the same speed cassette. I hope anyway otherwise I've just wasted money on a wheel.
  • Will work no probs, I did the same with spare wheel between road and turbo without issue. Just make sure you fit the cassette as intended, there should be no spacer behind a 9 speed cassette and the lockring should pull it all down tight.

I`ve some 9 speed cassettes here if you want one? Tiagra, 105 and Ultegra. Done hardly anything, as I`ve moved up to 10 speed I had to swap my spare wheel and winter wheels to 10 speed cassettes.

    This^

I did the same on of my bikes recently and both were 10 spd. Now I just swap the spare wheel over when I want to use the trainer.
