How good are the January sales??

This will be the first Janurary that I will have been interested in cycling, so I have not yet witnessed a January sale for bicycle parts. I was wondering how good they are, I mean, are the savings good? I am contemplating getting an Ultegra groupset, or maybe just upgrading a few bits, and I don't know whether I should wait until January or not, if you think the sales are worth it, I will wait, if not, I may buy them now? What are your opinions?

Usually september onwards is a good time to snap up last years (09) models as this is when the 2010 kit hits the shops. However manufacturers underestimated the demand this year - and many bikes were out of stock by august. - and there wasn't the usual september sale. The bike I purchased in August - is still more or less the same price today.
Personally I would set yourself a budget, and start doing the research - frame v groupset is a classic dilemma - you can get a none brand carbon frame with a nice groupset for around £1000 - or you could buy a pinarello, alu frame, low end groupset for £1200...
The bargains of 09 seemed to be
Ribble Sportive
Planet X
Boardman,
check those out as a starting point.......enjoy0 -
Are LBS likely to have January sales too? finnaly got together some funds for my first bike so don't mind waiting a few weeks in order to save a couple of quidCycling Newbie

Halfords might after the Christmas rush, but traditional bike shops tend to discount stuff in Sept / Oct when the next year's stuff is launched.
You're unlikely to save anything by waiting.0 -
More so this year, as the VAT is going up from 15% to 17.5%.
I reckon you might have a week after Xmas (whilst is still 09) where you might be able to bag a bargain from the likes of Evans, Edinburgh or Wiggle.x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x

just re read your original post - seems you are after a groupset not a bike. I got a good deal on ultegra sl - just be asking - it cost me an extra £90 over 105.....of course this is 09 ultegra , not the new 2010 stuff - but hey its ultegra !0

I'd definitely keep and eye out for the Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative sales. Last year I got Sram Rival shifters, brakes, front and rear mechs for a total of £130.

I am contemplating upgrading a Giant SCR 1.0, from 105 to Ultegra, do you think it is worth the change??0 -
105 is a good groupset which will bring a smile to your face with it's smooth gear changes. Ultegra is slightly better, but you'ld get more bang for your buck if you spend more on comfy bits. i.e. shorts, saddle etc.

You can get Ultegra now for just over £400 why wait any longer? Just go and get it now!Bianchi. There are no alternatives only compromises!

The lists for the Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative January sale are now available.

The sale itself is due to start at 10.00 am on January 2nd. I seem to remember that their last sale went live earlier than the advertised time, so it will be worth checking in periodically beforehand. I've got my eye on a couple of things.

GB Cycles (www.gbcycles.co.uk) always have a good Christmas sale. I think it runs until the end of this weekend, so is worth a look.0

I did a bit of shopping on Christmas day, lots of places were offering between 10 and 20% off, even off their already discounted prices. Got some crank bros pedals reduced from £59.99 for £18!!!! got a stem, a couple of pairs of gloves and a kit bag, all were a minimum of 50% off in total. If you see a bargin grab it cos you will be kicking yourself if you wait and miss out, just look at how much stuff has gone up over the last 2 years....Sunday September Ultegra SL

I just bought a Gore Power ladies jacket 50% off, £63.50 instead of £127, on JohnLewis.com of all places (was looking for saucepans but got sidetracked :? ) All their Gore bike wear was half price. It arrived today and will do very nicely as it packs up really small0

Play to your strengths!
I just had a look on John Lewis and they had a Gore Jacket for blokes, but was loose fit and yellow. Good price, though...

I dont think you'd really notice it on the road.
I changed from 105 to ultegra levers when mine broke and as far as I can tell, graphics aside, they were identical.0
