First bike - not sure what what I need?

Hi,
I'm completely new to cycling but want to get a bike so I can start triathlon training. I run and swim already so it's just the bike that's missing!
However I'm really not sure what to go for.
I don't want a tri/tt bike as they are too specialised for me. Really I want something that I can be used for training on roads and the odd trail or off road pathway. The bike won't be used for commuting as I walk to work.
Cyclocross bikes keep on coming into my head and I like the look of the Specialized Tricross 2010 Cyclo Cross bike. However I'm still not certain?
What are the opinions of the experienced BikeRadar community?
Thanks,
Ross

Hi and welcome to the site.
You don't mention your budget but I'll assume its under a grand. Are the Tri's your doing road based, I know some can be off road as well? If offroad then a Tricross would be a good choice although there are plenty of alternatives( Focus do a very good one). The most important thing is to get the best fit. Get yourself to a good LBS and tell them what your needs are and they should do the rest. No such thing as a bad bike nowerdays so go with your desires and make sure its comfortable.Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

Thanks for the advice.
Yes my budget is under a thousand. I think a trip to the bike store is in order.
