hi guys

So I went out for my first ride today on the BMC, 40 miles or so, it was good. Few things that needs addressing though. First of whch was the conti ultras. Binned. got 5 punctures on them in one ride ffs!

Anyway, what I need is to know a bit more about the clothing. I ideally want some cheapish tights that do not need anything to be worn underneath them and provide some comfort in the male region, as I am a bi worse for wear today after wearing football shorts and boxers.. ouch.

I also have an altura jacket, which is fine, but I really want to know what most people wear in the winter do they wear a base layer then the jacket, or something else?

I prefer to buy from CRC so if anyone has any idea what kind of stuff I need that would be great :D

Not the right place for coming out of the closet....

Have a look at Road Beginners, there is a current post in there about what people wear in these temperatures.

I'd personally suggest a pair of padded bibshorts and unpadded tights/bibs over the top.

Yes, a base layer under the jacket.

...as well as CRC, also look at Prendas for clothing. http://www.prendas.co.uk/default.asp

Time to start looking like big daddy :D bibs are mans second best invention :)
  • Up top I normally go for base layer, short sleeve jersey, then either long sleeve top/windproof jacket/rainproof jacket/gillet depending on weather.
Below, I have some Spech MTB shorts, which I'm currently using the padded liner with some windproof bib tights. I sometimes use overshoes if it's wet. I also use some small briefs if it's really cold, to keep at least some small warmth in, um,...well yeah.

Arm warmers are a good backup and useful to have in jersey pockets, unless you happen to lose one of the blighters. I did. Now I have one arm warmer. What use is that? Not sure that question should be answered.

FCN 3 or 4 on road depending on clothing
FCN 8 off road because I'm too old to go racing around.

I wear padded winter trousers - just like tights with padded bottom, and light fleecy inner fabric hugging your legs. Great in this weather. I usually get a pair in ALDI bike sale each September for £10/£12. I know you have missed the sale this year, but other shops must do similar but they will will a bit dearer - the ALDI ones are branded as Crane cycling gear. I'm still wearing a pair that I got a few years ago as they look good as well as doing the job.
