Seat height advice?

I like to have my seat height so that I can get my tip toes on the ground. I used to have an old 26inch bike and this was fine. Now switched to a 700mm tire bike, the larger tires hold the bike frame higher up making the pedals are higher, so at the same seat height I feel more cramped and have been getting knee ache.
So it seems like I have no choice but to heighten the seat? I know some people do this but Is it the norm to have a seat where you cant get your feet on the gorund? I am worried about this, I sometmies lose balance when going very slowly (like passing through a narrow gap etc) and have always put a foot down, but if I raise the seat I fear I may fall sideways and fall into the road! Any advice on thiis matter? thank you.

Yes it is normal, you soon get used to leaning off the front of the seat so your crotch is above the top tube to put your foot down. Definately not worh risking the knees IMOwinter beast: http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr34 ... uff016.jpg

Seat height should be set to give the correct distance between pedal and seat. Distance to the ground is irrelevent. You will find it about 1" more on an MTB where ground clearance is important. For best power and comfort the saddle should be as high as you can get it without your pelvis rocking on the saddle.0
