Hidden cables on shimano

I've only ever used shimano external gear cables and what I like about that is that changing the cable is very, very simple.
I was just wondering with the internal cables of new shimano, campag and sram are the gear cables as easy to change? Does the bar tape have to come off first?
I'm just curious here by the way, but I am wondering if a lot of the 'new' stuff/ideas is really making life simpler for people. My preference is for handbuilt wheels on good tyres that fit with bar end shifters on the end of my aero bars set to friction. KISS.

The bar tape needs to be unwrapped back to the shifters to remove the cables, not the trickiest job in the world.
You can get flexible cable housing that goes over the outers and allows you to slide the cable through with the tape in situ. It used to be supplied with the cables when brake cables first went along the bars, but not many places seem to stock it now.0 -
Its not often you need to change a gear cable - I reckon youd change bar tape more often.0
