Do they still make bikes with that such brake .. ???

On the train home tonight a person came on with his BMX and i noticed he had no brakes which lead me to assume the bike had a pedal back brake system ?

The BMX probably had no brakes. Plenty of cruiser-type bikes still have coaster brakes over here.

  • Stick a fixed hub on and et voila back pedal braking :D Also by going fixed girls will flock to you as you instantly become more attractive, you will sprout more hair as your manliness will grow, you will be an instant hero!!!

The downside is you'll be forced to wear skinny jeans a stupid hat and ride everywhere with and air of self importance.

A fixed hub isn't a back pedal brake. A back pedal brake is one where you can freewheel, but if you pedal backwards, it decelerates the hub.

How does the hub tell the difference between freewheeling at high speed and back pedalling at low speed? Or doesn't it?

Blimming 'eck it was a joke  I ride fixed and I use brakes as I am not mad. I also wear a mish mash of mtb or road cycling gear whilst riding it. Do I get my own niche for this???

Plenty of 'cool' kids ride now without brakes on their BMX. I see them dragging their feet to stop as they pass my house on their way to school.

Bloody odd if you ask me - classic case of fashion over function.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

A back-pedal brake does not freewheel - it 'coasts'. The mechanism is different:

Okay, well I meant 'rolling forwards without pedalling', not freewheeling. From Sheldon, I guess it's basically the movement of the chain relative to the 'reaction arm'? It's the arm that acts as a reference point to show if the sprocket is being turned backwards, rather than the movement of the chain relative to the wheel.

Sorry, I just thought you'd misunderstood the idea of a back pedal brake.
I never did understand fixie riders.

This is very true, once spoke to a 65 year old man riding a brand new Charge fixie. He bought it as he reckoned it was hip and trendy. :P

The only time I've ridden a bike with back pedal braking was in Amsterdam, probably the most frightening cycling experience of my life. The brake was really bad, it was a single speed, and it probably didn't help my balance that someone was sitting on the luggage rack over the back wheel
