Poor salesmanship

I have just been browsing Google for the best prices on SRAM Red shifters.
JE James quote £279.99 - the cheapest I can find.

I also clicked on a link to another shop and the link took me to the page but showed a higher cost.
Fair enough, so I phoned to check anyway.
The sales person had a poor attitude in my opinion and whilst he was polite and said they aim to be the cheapest (fair enough again) I tiold him the price of the other shop and he just said, 'Well buy them from there then'. he went onto say the prices differ due to exchange rates etc which is again fair enough but why come across like that.
Surely a better approach would have been to say something like, 'sorry but we can't match that price'.
As it turns out this shop is very cheap anyway and I found them useful helping me with my Bottom bracket query so it hasn't put me off using them.
Perhaps he's just having a bad day.

    Thanks.

I'm already registered under another name but I'm at work so I can't get in under my current details as I didn't know my password.

Need to do this anyway as I wanted to advertise my Ultegra gears asap.

I once ordered a bike online through J E James, waited a week for it, never heard anything about it, phoned up only to be told "we don't have that bike and won't get it". I asked why no-one had contacted me to tell me, why the bike was being advertised at that price and what they could offer me and got completely blanked. I promise I wasn't being aggro, but customer service was probably worse than zero.

In the interests of fairness, I had bought a bike from them before that turned up fine and whilst there was no customer interaction, it was cheap as chips... I guess you get what you pays for...

I ordered a bike, £3k's worth, that was in stock online from JE James. As the bike turned out to be last years model and was not in stock, they phoned me, said they were upgrading the order to the present model and at no extra cost, saving me about 400 quid. I guess you must have had someone on a bad day.
  • It only took JE James 6 weeks to get me my spokes...

Although 2 weeks was my error, they did arrive 24 nipples short of a party though!

Quickly corrected though and it was an easy mistake to make!

Fudges Cycles were the shop that had the grumpy salesman.

I wasn't going to mention it but I guess it can't do any harm.

One of my local bike shops is Phil Corley's in Milton Keynes.
My mate and I are regular visitors and the service provided is always good.
They even help out over the phone when you need help.

Was this poor salemanship? You weren't going to buy them anyway because you found them cheaper elsewhere!

I've used JE James once, on the plus side they did send half of my order. After 2 months and many pointless phone calls they cancelled the other half!

Well IMO yes. As it happens I'll be buying the SRAM Red rear and front mechs from Fudges so they'll get a decent sum of money from me.

It was just his answer really.....it certainly didn't put me off.

Even in the hardest of times manners and politeness cost nothing.

@Daimler - nice one for supporting your LBS and buying from them, I find it's worth paying a bit extra (if they don't do a price match  ) and get the goods when you pay for them.

You'd better do some work now - some deals can be done in 15 minutes I'm sure :D

Just remember - you're sat on a comfy chair at a nice desk, not in a workshop fitting a bottom bracket when the bloody phone goes again!!!:lol::lol:

Gimme the greasy hands any day....:lol:

My mate just got an amazing deal for 2009 Fulcrum Zero's at £675 a pair from Phil Corley (our local LBS). Mind you....we've spent our fair share in the shop....my mate much moreso than me.

I might get them to quote me on all the SRAM bits and Fulcrum RS chainset I want. :D

You've more chance of platting fog than getting money off at James'. My mate bought a cheapo kids MTB for his daughter, drove to pick it up to find it had a scratch on toptube, not a big problem for an 8yr old but they wouldn't shift on the price.

    He bought elsewhere.
