Changing a hub dynamo halogen light to LED. Worth it?

I have run a Schmidt dynamo for years and years (brilliant thing) with various lights over this time. The current Schmidt halogen is very good, but LEDs are coming up all the time. How much extra light do you actually get from eg a B & M LED over the halogen? Is it worth spending £80 or thereabouts and then having no particular use for the halogen light (which seemed expensive at the time). I have tried working out the lumens etc, but become confused and have just remembered that there are a lot of experts out there!

  • Absolutely well worth it. You'd be amazed at how much better the LED lights are.
I have both an IQ Fly and an IQ Cyo (and have had an early Solilights). The Cyo and Fly have pretty much the same beam pattern, the Cyo seems a little more robust and doesn't stick out as much whereas the Fly has an option to dip the light which can be useful (although not really necessary).
I understand the Schmidt Edelux uses the same innards but is really well made and robust, but then does cost a lot more.
Your choice but whichever you get you'll be impressed.
  • Thanks for this. I am convinced - AND available from SJS Cycles, my favourite shop - AND Christmas coming. But I have noticed recently that there seems to be a bit of derisive snorting going on whenever I suggest to my wife that my cycling is cheaper than having a second car
