Mini pumps

Just popped out to the garage to rectify the damage done by the PF, I got to that point where I needed to put a little air into the tube before putting it back on.

The track pump was the other side of the garage, so I decided to pop the mini pump off the frame and use that, a bit of a mistake as it goes. Fortunately I pumped a bit before attaching the pump to the tube, I covered the far wall of the garage in a horrible rusty slime. I haven't used said pump in quite a while

I also recently stopped using a Blackburn minipump because the seals on it had gone for similar reasons.

Now I only really carry a minipump for the purpose of that little job and as a backup, full inflation comes from a CO2 thingy or the track pump.

So can anybody recommend a minipump that will get the job done and not hold loads of water and turn it to gunk?

Recently bought a Topeak Pocket Rocket (after snapping my old pump in protest at its unbelieveable cr@pness). Very pleased with it. Used it several times and got great psi out of it without causing a massive build up of lactic acid in my arm.

I'm quite a fan of my Lezyne Pressure Drive. It's pretty much been the only mini-pump of it's size that I've been happy with.

As far as not holding water... I've also managed to put it through the washing machine (must. check. jersey. pockets. better.), and well, it still seems to inflate tyres fine. :)

+1 for the pocket rocket. Tiny, very light and lives in my saddle bag.
  • I've swiched from the pocket rocket to CO2, mainly the problem I have is the fairy doesn't call here often. so I'm rather out of practise and the pump has been sitting under the bike for some time.

brought home just after the new surface was laid in richmond park and while getting the tire off etc, the pump (pocket rocket) I couldn't get to inflate more than 20psi if that.

the pump has now dried out and seems to be clean but I've rather given up with mini pumps.

I keep every thing in the saddle bag so the pumps to be fair get very very wet.

Maybe time to invest in a new waterproof saddlebag? The one I have is made by Specialized and things inside stay bone dry.

Ditto. 200 'pumps' gets to 120psi (+/1) with a 25c tyre. You can also reuse it so, on the morning a few weeks ago when I got four visitations from the PF I wasn't stood looking at an empty Co2 bottle thinking "F....".

nb One thing to be aware of, not all Lezyne pumps will fit both presta and shraider valves even though the adapter looks as if it will. So if you need to inflate both check on the card-back before you buy.

well the pumps tend to be to long to fit in a saddle bag, and the CO2 seems at least on test inflates do the job. and fit neatly in the bag.

to be fair I've always hated mini pumps!

+1 It got reviewed in a number of bike mags with 9's or 10's for construction, inflatory powers and cost. Dog's cahonnes. Tis a nice piece of kit. I have the alloy mtb version.

I know what you mean - no fun pumping away in cold, wet, dirty conditions.
  • Another one who's given up on mini-pumps here. Last time I used it, it took about 5 minutes to get to 70 PSI. Now a CO2 fan, 1.5 seconds to get to 130 PSI? Much better! If only they's do nitrogen bottles, so you didn't need to pump it up again when you get home.
  • Though to be fair I carry a zefal x3 strapped to my downtube all the time.

I've got a specialized air tool road. It's great gets up to pressure quickly and only cost me £10, I think they're £12 now though. Looks a bit cack on the bike though, but it's a commuter so meh.

+1 for the toppeak mini pumps, very useful in an emergency.

But do any of these still work after being frame mounted through 6 weeks of rain?

I've got a Secondwind minipump and it's not failed yet. I like the way they have an O ring seal to keep the handle from rattling

Mine does. It sit's cipped against the downtube next to the bottle holder. In fact this last week is the first time I've used it in about 4 months.

I have a Lezyne Pressure drive and as it has rubber plugs in both ends, that should stop the water getting in and does both types of valves.

I have a Topeak Mini which I was pleased with when pumping up 2.1" MTB tyres to 35 psi. But for some reason I can't get in on Presta valves so have not tried it taking my slicks up to 90 psi. If the fairy gives me a tap on the shoulder away from home, I'll be in a bit of a state...

I had one of these that failed miserabley in the same way as OP's, plus the gauge never worked. Thankfully Wiggle allowed me to return it for a refund.

I then went for a mountain morph but thankfully Ive not used it in anger yet.

I had a Zefal SP-4 frame-fit pump until recently- must have bought it sometime in the '80s.

It wasn't a mini-pump, so wouldn't go in a bag, but I was frame-fitting the pump anyway, so that wasn't a problem. Lived on whichever bike I was riding all the time, so not particularly weather-sensitive! I think carrying upside down on a winter hack's seat-stay did for it- spray in the handle rusted out the shaft. My mistake, though: definitely abuse!

Worked so well I've never felt the need for a track-pump, and I was alarmed by how hard it was to replace it. Mini-pumps and those "double-shot" things look too gimmicky to me, all the Zefal ever needed was an occasional dab of grease on the piston.

    Cheers,
    W.

Can't rmember exact model, but i've got a topeak mini with gauge.

Had it several years - but earlier this year I carefully stripped it right down and cleaned/greased it - which gave it a new lease of life.
