Helmets - what's the difference in price

Looking to replace my Giro Indicator lid, it's a few years old now. I'm happy to go and get the same one again, it's served me well (never had to test out its protection qualities though), and the price is good, but what's the difference between the £30 Indicator, and, say, the £144 Ionos? Surely even the cheapest basic ones meet the standards required of helmets? What do the expensive ones do that the cheap ones don't?

Comments

  • Better weight & aerodynamics. Sometimes stronger and comfier strap systems.
  • The ironic thing is you pay more for less

More expense = more vents = less material

I went from a chaeper one to an Ionos and the main difference is comfort. The more you pay the better the fit and you really dont feel your wearing it at all. Also, in the summer they keep you cooler with better ventilation.

why dont the swiss manufacture a helmet from their famous swiss cheese. the air pockets would cushion any blow and if stranded you could eat it . i this was ever to become reality i would be first iin line for a "cheesy helmet"

I imagine cheese would have good shock-absorbing and cushioning qualities. As long as it's not that crumbly cheese though.

It did occur to me that the more you pay for a helmet the less you get (ie. more vents). Some I can see this straight away, like the Ionos, but others don't look all that different to the Indicator but still double or treble the price.

As a longtime and proud owner of a 'cheesy helmet' I can honestly say that it certainly ensures that I have had no dangerous action involving my 'head' for a number of years .

Sometimes there are threads you just wish you'd never opened.....

Having been swooped on by magpies on numerous occasions while out riding, I was going to say that a cheesy helmet would attract the birds.....but perhaps not, eh!

There some cheap ones with very comfortable fitting systems. Ive always been partial to Met helmets with their flexable nylon band, it fits almost any size and shape of head.
I prefer to have fewer, larger holes so I can fit a D-lock through the gap.

on a bit of a side the old helmet no helmet rants are getting old i feel we need to add a new layer to the rants and raves with

combineing LA rants and helmet rants and for a a bit of relish on top should i use

( please spot the campa referance on the kit and the possibilitys for the capag/shimano rants also .)

I feel that if we manage to get one person to rant on all 3 points enough in one post then we could end the world in 2012.

You're paying for a better material/design. Results in a lighter helmet that is just as strong, or even stronger.

Ok then. Will the Catlike Whisper Limited Edition Thor Hushovd helmet save my life?
  • Helmets are a waste of time, they cause rotational brain injuries apparently-whatever they are. Also they make you look ghey

I take no responsibility for Stefanos's post or any ensuing war of words
  • I have been cynical about helmet manufacturers ever since the "periscoped" Reevu helmet was frozen out of the market. It was / is a good fit with the added attraction of a genuine rear view. I still wear one daily, the old one probably saved my life, replaced by an Ebay bought one about a year ago, still works well. I have noticed that when I am occasionally driving the car I keep flicking my eyes upwards rather than at the real mirror to look backwards!
