i had knee surgery on Monday and was wondering if anyone has had a cycling specific rehab plan written for them?

my surgery involved patella debridement and plica division(extra fibrous band on the synovial sack). it would appear i have very little medial cartlidge remaining so the surgeon told me i can't run anymore, but i should take up cycling, felt wrong to tell him i've got one or two bikes!

  • Hi,

would try a physio/ or sports therapist for advice their after all they are the pros and as you have probaly gathered knees very complex ! Husband seeing a physio for knee injury and been given exercises specific for his injury. Surpised the surgeon didn't refer you to the physio !

I know where you are coming from I had arthroscopy on the 27/11 (partial lateral menisectomy). Still hard to tell if the problem is sorted. I go for a review on 9/12 and to have stitches removed. I have been off the bike for a good few months.

Day after surgery I started ROM exercises and straight leg lifts trying to wake up my quads and stayed fairly mobile. From reading others opinions cycling seems to be good rehab in itself. However, I am going to take it steady now until next season building my base back gradually. I may see a sports physio I have used before for some further advice, I think he will just suggest plenty of stretching and quad strengthening.

If I were you i would probably try to find a physio with interest in biking before you get going again see if you have any areas you need to 'iron out'. Last thing you want is to overdo it getting back to shape.
  • thanks for the replies. I'm seeing physio this week (16/12) but was wondering if anyone had been given a cycling related rehab to discuss with them as want to get the best from having physio.

I had physio for another injury previously and i found that the rehab wasn't very helpful for cycling so was trying to avoid starting exercises that may not be helpful.
