Hi, I've decided to get into some downhill and cross country biking and have £450 to spend. So has anyone spotted any better deals than a GIANT YUKON FX 2 for £440 delivered? If not is this a good deal and a good entry level bike?
Thanks for taking any time out to help

For that kind of money you would be better off looking at a hardtail, particularly as an entry level bike. The forks are very poor on that Yukon as are many of the other components. Only my opinion however and I'm by no means an expert
As far as better bargains are concerned, someone will be along soon to recommend a Carrera or GT Aggressor for that kind of moneyVaaru Titanium Sram Red eTap

Interesting, what are these other bikes you speak of? Is hard tail the way to go then?
Cheers for the help0 -
It ain't a DH bike - XC through and through.0

Almost bought one of those a few moths back.... but decided on a HT with better forks
And it's probably a weighty bugger at that price.Cool, retro and sometimes downright rude MTB and cycling themed T shirts. Just MTFU.

Carrea Fury is on offer at the minute - decent, 'do it all' bike (in the sense is a bit beefier and longer travel than a balls out XC bike)0

I know it's a tad over your budget, but this must be one of the best deals at the moment?

I've been told not to touch anything set up by Halfords by a friend that works at Halfords lol. So i'm very reluctant to touch them. I have been looking at hardtails but they're to many to choose from. EvansCycles have loads in my price range and i have no idea where to look.
Cheers for the advice0 -

^^ Exactly what my brother did. Not the greatest hardtail in the world but he only uses it occasionally so he's not that bothered. The stock fork is awful though so I sold him some Toras I'd got lying around.0

Plenty of people on here have had perfectly fine service from Halfords. I have. Maybe there's another branch you can use, not the one your friend works in!
I think this months What Mountain Bike did a review of £500 hardtails, would be worth buying to narrow down your choices.0 -
I got a yukon fx2 back in the summer from Pauls at that price. Personally I think its great and for the money I couldn't have done better. Granted the front shock isn't the best but its fine for me and this bike is a whole load better than an old rigid bike I had before. Its not that heavy in my opinion.
One thing I would say about the fork is if you're light weight it won't move much unless you plan on really hammering it. I'm 14.5 stone and i don't get full travel. Also the original brake pads wore out really fast but thats a minor gripe and cheap to fix.
This bike has held up well on loads of XC stuff including the W2 at Afan where I kept up with my mates on much more expensive kit. If this is your budget and you plan on regular XC and more importantly want a full suspension over HT you won't go far wrong.0 -

There's nothing wrong with the bikes Halfords sells though. The Carrera is an excellent bike for the money. Occasionally some of the Halfords' staff are a bit dicey but a lot of them are very good.
Don't be put off by second hand hearsay.0 -
yukon is a solid bike for the dough , my mates got one , came with great kenda tyres.
heavier than the titanic though0 -
The Carrera Fury really is extremely good for the money, and the 08 ones (arguably better than the new one) is on discount just now, for under £500 it would be an easy choice, for me...
Sure, Halfords setup is sometimes diabolical, but you're looking at buying mail order! So you're comparing possibly dubious halfords setup, with generally no setup at all.Uncompromising extremist0 -
Got the Yukon FX1 in march.Same frame different spec parts from Pauls Cycles.Brilliant bike.10 times better to ride than the Cube Acid I had.It might be heavier on paper but it climbs so easily.I used to be at the back of the group on my Cube on the granny gear. Now I'm well away, Middle and middle gear no leg pain or anything and the Suspension makes the ride much nicer aswell.Go for it you won't regret it.Any problems I had were sorted over the phone or by email/post with no problems. And if you want to use it you can use interest free credit to spread the cost.0
