Washing Windstopper Jacket

Right chaps... Have bought myself a new and gorgeous Etxeondo windstopper jacket and am now petrified of ruining it in the wash.

The tag said handwash with soft soap, the Windstopper website said machine wash and my mate says wash it on its own with no detergent.

What's the right answer?

  • That's not gonna fly, it's going to get muddy and sweaty isn't it?

Hamdwash should cause any damage and get it clean enough. You could also wear it in the shower after a ride.

Use this. Even gets a white Francais de Jeux clean as a whistle and re-proofs it as well.

...and why do you dispute the care label? It is there for a reason.

Wash it according to the label. If you ruin it take it back to the shop and explain that you washed it according to the instructions.

    Delicates cycle.

Delicates powder / liquid (NON bio).

Use a mesh bag, to reduce friction on the surface of the jacket.

Once in a while use nikwash to reproof the water repellant coating - only when the water wont bead anymore. Waste of money using it each wash.

Garments that say handwash only can alway be machined - just the manufacturer playing safe and covering themselves against claims. It would say dry clean only if there was an issue!!

Use Nikwax techwash or soap flakes. Don't use any normal detergent (even non bio) as they will affect the DWR and breathability.

You can use a machine as it the handwash cycle is probably just as gentle, if not more so, that doing it yourself. However you need to clean out all of the detergent residue from the machine first. I usually give it a good clean then run a wash cycle first without detergent.

Don't waste your money, just use soap flakes. About a quarter of the price and lasts ten times longer.

    Run an empty cycle?

What a hideous waste of leccy/water/effort.

What do you think the rinse part of the wash does! It flushes your drum (as a side effect) ready for the next batch. Seems like OTT to run empty washes!

It's windstopper. The fabric isn't treated it's the material itself that stops the wind. Use non-bio or delicates washing liquid on a 30 deg cycle. Have a look at eg Assos care instructions

Most windstopper fabrics have water repellency. It helps to maintain this!
Water repellency has nothing to do with wind, but a lot to do with this sort of product.

You are right that the wind element is a membrane, so not at risk. However, anything that comes with windstopper fabric, softshell or hardshell, usually has a coating to bead off water - and should still be washed with care.

I asked this question to my friend who works for Nikwax. Nikwax sell special product for windstopper and Gortex jackets. Sorted!!
  • I have a Exte Ondo Windstopper jacket that I use for commuting. Used all last winter getting washed fortnighthly with whatever detergents on special offer at 30 degrees and its still in great shape and use it daily now. Certainly just as warm and I can't say I've noticed it being less showerproof.
BTW I now love Exte Ondo as this jacket is fantastic (its the 'Urkri' model or some name similar)
