Cleat mount problem

I have a pair of new Bontrager RL Mountain shoes. I used them yesterday for the first time and had an off when I thought the cleat had come loose. But it turns out to be the mounting plate inside the shoe if you follow?
I've looked at them both tonight and I can move the cleat mount (female section in the shoe) from underneath/outside the shoe up and down the travel.
Now I am being making an arse of myself online  Is this correct?
Did I just not tighten them enough?

yes they should be adjustable.
sounds like you have not tightened then up."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
