Road shoe size vs. MTB shoe size

I have a pair of Shimano MTB shoes in size 42 that fit me perfectly. I wanted some road shoes, so thought I could not go wrong if I ordered some Shimano shoes in the same size. WRONG. Orders some R099 online, and they are too small, so am having to return them. I'll be getting my shoes at a proper shop in future!
Just wondering whether anyone else has come across such inconsistency in shoe sizes from the same manufacturer?

In case it is of interest, the following is a statement from Madison (Shimano importer):In general Shimano shoes tend to be approximately one Euro size smaller
than other brands. Due to the design and style of Shimano mountain bike
shoes they are wider fitting (equating to approximately half a Euro size
bigger) than Shimano road shoe models.

We would advise all consumers to visit a Madison dealer to try shoes on,
before purchasing.
