Hi guys, I don't need any "just get wet" comments, a soggy crack really isn't pleasant!

Just wondered, what crud catcher style front, and rear guards people have used. I've got a crud catcher on the front at the moment, but it catches on the gear cables, which run underneath the downtube. As a result I've had to use a full outer, which is moving around and rubbing my frame. I also want a rear one now that it's so much wetter.

I was thinking Cycraguard on the front, seeing as they seem to be built to avoid the downtube cable issue. Will it be any better than the Crud? But what about the rear, it's for a Boardman HT with 27.2mm seatpost, if that matters.

  • Downtube guards are rubbish when it's really wet- get a moto-X style (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=16842) front guard if you want too keep as much mud / water off. Downtube guards only help if you're going in a straight line and they don't stop water flying up into your face from the front

I've got a neoguard too, for stuff getting thrown forwards.

And the Crud front I've got at the mo works fine for me, it just fouls the cables.

JonnyC, is that the Crud rear one?

I might get the Cycrguard twin pack, seeing as it's cheaper than getting the front and rear seperately. As long as there's no horror stories.

  • I had a neoguard fitted and a frame mounted type front crud catcher, and when I went out in the real wet muddy conditions they both did very little!! (good in summer tho when it's not so wet)

Anyway when I was getting a coat from CRC decided to try a proper front mudguard, I went for the cheapest option so as not to waste any money if it was rubbish, I can't say how pleased I am with it tho!! It's light wieght and works very very well, I have the neoguard still fitted aswell as the mudguard, now when I go riding from the knee's up is clean :o

don't waste your money on a frame mounted type

here is the one I bought

I tend to be clean on the front, like someone else said, from the knees up anyway. It's my back that gets the real muck, with constant gritty, muddy spray off the back tyre.

So it's more the rear I'm interested in, as I'm happy with the crud style front guard.

I've got a Cycraguard front and rear set on my Anthem, works pretty well for general soggy conditions and is easy enough to fit and adjust. Also no cable fouling problems. As some one mentioned above, the front down-tube mounted guard might struggle in 'bog snorkelling' conditions but in those cases I reckon you're going to get with with any type of guard !

Thanks guys, I was set on the Cycraguard, but just wanted to be sure they weren't secretly terrible!

  • Hi bails,
I have just fitted the Cycragaurd twin pack to my Boardman Team HT, was out at the weekend and came home with a couple of splashes on my back but that was about it and also didn't move at all like preious rear mudgaurds have done.

The Crud Race Guard is pretty good if you don't mind leaving it in place. It fits well and doesn't move about but the feeble plastic splines mean that it doesn't want to come off without a fight.

Functionally it is superb. The amount of sh*te I scrape off the underside of mine after every ride is enough to build some mini dirt jumps

I just got one of those at the weekend. Brilliant!

Also got one of these as well for the back

I don't think I had is set properly as I did get some splash.... but I reckon it just needs setting further back out over the rear wheel.

It's also a complete doddle to fit... no tools required. It clips on but is really solid in place when fitted.

I just bought the front Shockboard from Wiggle, arrived today (no Haribos  ) and was looking at the options for rear. I'm going to probably get it from here though as it's a fiver cheaper

Mine was full whack from my LBs. Silly me . But hey... I like shopping local. Plus I needed it Saturday.

    It is pretty neat though.

The front looks well made, not fitted it yet but looks like a nice bit of kit. I will probably try it before buying the rear though as it's not to stop me from getting muddy so much as keeping dog and horse shite out of my eyes/face. Having said that, the OH does moan about the wear and tear on the washing machine so I may get one to stop the ear ache.

That's part of the reason I'm getting them, I mean, putting dirty clothes in a washing machine, it's madness

The front guard is brilliant for that.... compared to a standard frame mounted guard. I had no issues whatsoever with mud and shite in the face.

Only downside is that my bike now looks like a motocross machines that's lost an engine.
