All prices listed are quoted from What bike Dec 09

Merida 96Carbon team D - Price 7.500 - POUNDS
Specialized Epic S works - Price 5.500
Lapheirre 910 - Price 6.000
trek top fuel 9.9ssl - price 4.500
scott spark 10 - price 3.999

If you owned these companies that makes those bikes what in reality would be your projected sales figures for the first 6months and for the whole year ..

for each of those Bikes ???

IMO if it wasn't for the lower priced bikes imo those Companies would be operating at a Loss ..

It would be nice if the magazine went in depth a bit more and asked the makers more in depth questions about sales figures on a whole ...especially top of the range models .

Be nice to see a sales chart complied from various shop outlets .. of what really is selling and what isn't .. including prices !!!

    Would it be nice?

I doubt many people are interested in actual sales figures, you're right, the lower spec models probably do fund the R and D, but then in later years they benefit from the trickle down of top end technology.

"As I said last time, it won't happen again."
  • If it wasn't for these bikes Mountain biking would stand still.
Innovate or die as specialized say...
  • The top spec bikes have a 'halo effect' on the lesser models, an this helps the sales of the lesser models.

prestige is worth any amount of money to a manufacturer in a competative market.
this is why VW spends nearly £5 million on building each bugatti veyron but sells them only for £1 million.
golfs and polos account for a massive % of sales yet the bugatti is still built for just a handful of sales.
the principles the same for any product - the desire to have the best.

its the same with designer clothes (and i mean the real top end stuff), the don't sell anything like enough to keep themselves afloat, it's all about promoting the image. all the revenue comes from the bags, perfumes etc. which the supposed 'little people' buy to grab themselves a bit of the prestige.

Erm aren't those competition capable bikes? How much would works WRC rally car cost compared to a showroom or even a club level production rally car? If anything those bikes are bargains

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford?
