Apparantly asking the same question and getting the same answers over and over again is OK on Bikeradar as it stimulates (the same) discussion.

True, but it's not always easy to get sensible results out of the search facility if you have a common word (like lights) in it. There's a fair few "What bike for £xxxx" threads too, probably as newcomers to the site (who are most likely to ask) don't know that it has been asked before?

Doesn't seem to stop you from posting on each of them though does it?

Could say the same about the Lance threads, RLJ, Helmets etc.

Difference I guess, is each year technology moves on?

    Yes but not each week!

Well I generally ignore "What Bike for £1000?" threads, and when I do answer the answers are generally one word (often CAAD9).

  • I don't think we have enough 'WHAT WHEELS' questions on this forum. Perhaps I should start one?

A slightly different take ...the search function isn't like it could be anyway ..this is a lot of the problem.

I posted to BR team cos the search function defaults to 'Search for any terms or use query as entered' and not 'Search for all terms' ...if it was the other way around then the results would come back with more sense... a lot of people don't think to play with these options and hence you search for something without changing them and get back irrelevant stuff... try searching for 'specialized allez' for example with the default option and then with the option clicked... the former doesn't give you any threads back with specialized allez in the title at all on the first scroll of results, click the option and it will.

The team didn't reply... They could also re-word those two descriptions to make sense if its part of the forums search config, although it might not be. If they couldn't get it to default to the other one by doing config changes then it could still be sorted with an onload command I reckon.

If we didn't have the Which (insert bike part)? or x vs y threads there wouldn't be much on the buying guide thread really would there?

I agree, the search engine on here is like that on many other forums – pretty wanting. However, plenty of the most common queries come up on here when practically identical posts are still on the front page. I think people just don't look, partly on the basis that it's easier to ask than to think. This tactic often goes with the old "grammar and punctuation are for wusses" mentality. wot lubes 4 me chain lol . Etc.

Maybe we could have a separate Lights section of the forum!
  • And a separate "what bike for £1k" section

+1, but only during autumn and winter months.
  • At least the topic of lights seems to be worthy of regular discussion, as the technology appears to be progressing quite fast at the mo.

    For example:-
2 years ago, the Electron 5+10w halogen was a good buy
Then came the Fenix L2D and its sucessor (L20D?)
Then the bargain basement Tesco Cree 3s
... I've lost track of what is the best DealExtreme light (P7s, 900 lumens, MagicShines etc)during this year!

    2020 Voodoo Marasa
2017 Cube Attain GTC Pro Disc 2016
    2016 Voodoo Wazoo
  • Seems to me that almost all the threads on the Buying section fall into one of two types -

    - Either the query is so wide (i.e. 'what bike for £x') that nearly every product that fits the bill is mentioned, and the OP isn't much better off, or

    - The query is quite specific so there's only a couple of products that fit the bill, in which case the answer is 'it doesn't really matter', 'whichever you like the look of' or 'go to your lbs and try them out'.

Anyway, I will be needing a set of lights soon, so which are the best?

I actually quite like the light threads, although I'm going to order some today (I won't say which ones!!) so maybe I'll get bored of them. It does seem that the people who moan about too many light threads still read them all.

My pet hate is thread titles that give no clue as to the subject matter. Those, and others about stuff I'm not interested in, I simply don't read.

If that happens, what you end up with is a monster long 60 page thread with the same questions asked repeatedly on different pages because nobody can be bothered to read all the way through (see the mountain bike section).

I'm not sure what benefit you get from asking the "what lights" question on a forum. Surely if you're interested in lights you'd at least go a review website where you can actually see the beams each light puts out. Because lights have improved so much, these threads just end up as "buy a brand x they're great" because the current models are so much improved on what people were using before.

Actually 2 years ago the p7 was out and about, took me this long to drum it into everyone it was a good buy. ;)
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.
