I bought some NOS Campagnolo brake lever hoods for the retro rocket from a guy in the US. He posted them & a week or so later they turned up at my local Royal Mail depot. They weren't delivered at this point but a card was posted informing me of a customs charge. This was paid online, so then I went to the depot to pick up my parcel.

Mr Mail at depot couldn't find them so sent me away & told me to ring them in a few days to see if parcel had been found. It wasn't found so I was given forms in order to claim for the lost parcel.

Got reply today. Because parcel was posted from abroad Royal Mail are not responsible for it's whereabouts. Due to " Universal Postal Agreement" I don't get my money back. Apparently they advise me to contact the seller to see if he'll start an " investigation" from the US. That's right, Royal Mail want me to contact a guy in California so he can find out why a parcel I paid for & he posted has been lost in Goole...out of pocket by £51.59!

In summary, my parcel is either in a Royal Mail van or in Goole depot & a Royal Mail staff
member had lost/mislaid/pinched it, yet Royal Mail are not prepared to pay up for it's loss!!

  • Can't see why this should involve your guy in the States, as the parcel clearly made it to your door, or you wouldn't have received the card.
To err is human, but to make a real balls up takes a super computer.
  • would have thought a small claim in the small claims court would resolve this

+1 The note through your door indicates that Royal Mail have the parcel and at that point in time knew where it was. They have since lost it so it's their responsibility.

This form - ftp://ftp.royalmail.com/Downloads/public/ctf/rm/International_P58_form_English_09.pdf - suggests that you can claim rather than the company who sent it to you. I think the card they put through your door might be pretty good evidence that it was posted. if not, see if the sender has a proof of postage.

And don't forget to claim back the customs and VAT charges.

Keep on at them - their whole process for things like this seems to be designed to wear you down. At some point they'll offer you some stamps to get you to b*gger off but stick with it. It took about four 'Dear PO, this isn't good enough...' letters to get proper payment.
