For reasons too tedious to explain, I will have the pleasure of being v close to Borough Market before 8 this Sat am.

Any recommendations for a breakfast spot there?

There is a very nice place by a large church I seem to remember, like a cafe, with seating downstairs, and a smaller upstairs seating area that is rather cosy.

Does full english, and tea, coffee etc

Has been several years since I went, so I don't know the name I am afraid

perhaps someone else will be more helpful.......

There's a McDonalds near Guys and St Thomas' hospital that'll russle you up a lovely Egg and bacon or sausage muffin, hash brown and cup'o'tea for decent price.

There are various stalls selling bacon rolls etc (and sausage - your favourite iirc  !) in the market itself. I think there's a Monmouth Coffee shop opposite the southern entrance. Don't think the pie stall is open at that time. Mmmm, pies...

If you're driving, there are usually free spaces down a side road on the right hand side, after the Southwark Bridge turning and sort of under that railway bridge just after it. "Red" something?

I had a lovely breakfast there the other week. As you enter the market with Roast on your right hand side, there is a crossroads of paths, turn right and go straight ahead. you will see before you a proper cafe, with proper tea.

Sounds a bit to posh for me I mean seriously... Bubble & Squeak. Bubble. Squeak. What the hell is that!?

I also don't trust anywhere that names its bacon, Ayrshire smoked streaky bacon.

Much prefer to be told "4 strips of bacon, 2 herbed-up sausages. 2 fried egg, toast, beans, mushrooms, chip and a nice cup'o'tea...."

How on earth can you not know what Bubble and Squeak is?

And it's far from posh - it's a northern way of using up leftover cabbage and mashed potato.

Heaven with a poached egg on top and an accompanying portion of black pudding.

Which is exactly how Roast serves it, if my memory serves me correctly.
  • Mmmm, borough market food.

None of what you've written, with the exception of mashed potato, even equates as food to me.

Black pudding is like kryptonite to me.

Edit: And urgh falafel. Back when I used to have vegetarian nights (what the hell was I thinking), my girlfriend made falafel. Sweet mercy, I ate it because I didn't want to be rude but that little boy inside of me that sometimes comes out when I smile. He was on his knees crying, pleading with me to stop.

On a related note (but not really worth its own thread) I can highly recommend the Scottish burger stall in the Winter Wonderland section of Hyde Park that runs until Christmas.

As you go in it's straight along the path and situated between the ice rink and the haunted house but over on the opposite side.

Have the Wallace burger, it's amazing.

Pic of menu (didn't take pic of burger as it just vanished into my belly):

    16743_184521306057_547521057_3495170_4701951_n.jpg

The rest of the Winter Wonderland is also good, plenty of bratwurst, fudge and beer (or mulled wine) to be had all over.
  • I have to say, borough market is rather over-hyped.

I went there not long ago, and found it a bit disappointing. Oh, and obscenely overpriced. A lot of the stalls are elsewhere too...

But that roast breakfast sounds great, if a little pricey. Hang on a moment, what was that about an egg on the bubble and squeak? What? FFS. No eggs. Ugh.

This might get ugly but to my mind chips are not part of a full english. Discuss.

Fried eggs (must have a runny yolk) are essential on bubble and squeak. And I should know because I'm bubble and squeak's biggest fan, fact.

  • Black Pudding - mmmmmmmm its lovely, fried quickly with a crispy outside and warm moist innards.

But the yang of white pudding really does make for a full breakfast (or breakfats as my kids say).

    Potato cakes - mmmmmm.

    Soda bread - mmmmmmm

I can see saturday morning unfolding in fromt of me now

Roast is pretty good for brekkie - of the posh kind. I've managed to wangle a few breakfast 'meetings' in there over the years, although to be honest I prefer a Caf style Full English with beans, fried bread etc and a mug of sweet tea. A rare pleasure these days, although Caramel in Pimlico does a pretty decent one.

As for Borough market - yeah it is over-priced but the fishmongers and butchers that can be found there are excellent and their produce is worth shelling out for now and again. Kicks supermarket stuff into touch.

Tom's in Notting Hill does a good greasy spoon style breakfast, but that it's really well-cooked.

Fair play on the fishmongers and butchers, but we have excellent butchers here in Ealing that aren't anywhere near as pricey.

After last night's masterclass I'm inclined to visit proper butchers far more often. I got the impression that there are a lot of substandard/ripoff merchants out there. Hopefully I'll find a decent one when I move as my current one is rubbish...

Hennessys on Northcote Road is v good. Doves is also v good, but pricier and run by a slightly odd guy. Who holds a knife.

However, Riverford is better still - they deliver meat & veg. Their meat is yum.

Bourough market is expensive in a touristy kind of way but some of the stuff there is so hard to find anywhere else you don't mind it now and then.

Ginger pig butchers does some good stuff (got this amazing chicken there once that had so much fat on it I thought I was in moist roast heaven) and the place next to it does stunning black pudding and haggis.

There's a place that does venison too - I bought a small roating joint from there which was the most tender meat I've ever had, absolutely lovely with a juniper berry/red wine sauce.
