Weight Loss - Normal ?

Been a keen cyclist for many years - never really lost any weight because of it.

I often commutted to work - but this was on \ off fair weather. and not in the dark at all. - weight was stable at 12.5-13 st .
About this time last year I began to commutte as my default transport to work. In march we moved office which mean I cycle an extra mile a day - and take in an extra hill. New office doesn't have a choccy vending machine. I have now got down to 11.5 stone and still falling. My tummy is a lot flatter - and I do look in relative terms quite fit. But can't quite understand why after years of trying the weight has sudedenly fallen off ?

My daily commutte is only around 12 miles - and I do an extra 30-50 at the weekends. Average speeds on my weekend rides are higher than normal - holding at about 15mph - down from 17 mph in the summer

Average speed on my commutte is 11.5

Is this weight loss normal or should I see my gp ?

I think you might have answered your know question

Well done for making me feel bad ( I work at home but thinking of going for a ride in the morning ), then going out on the bike
  • I think when your concerned its best to check it out with the GP but again thats only my slant on it...
  • It may well just be your cleaner lifestyle but you should see your GP of course. You already know it.
  • Go back to being a fairweather cyclist, start eating choccy again, and if the weight still keeps falling off you THEN see your GP.

I don't think it's abnormal to lose approx 1 stone through extra cycling and eating better. Buy a bigger bathroom mirror and enjoy your new waistline!

All of the small things make a huge difference. When i decided to lose some weight, i just cut out the obvious( sugar, choco, takeaways ) & started back at the gym. The weight has fallen off me ever since. Started at 14.5 stone now down to 11.25 stone.
Have just invested in a road bike (spesh allez double) & i have sold the car & now bike the work. Doing regular rides now after work instead of going to the gym.
How does the weight loss make you feel? If it doesnt make u feel good about yourself, then go & see your doctor. I am a rip old 36 & i have never felt fitter due to gym, bike & heathly(ish) eating. Going to do a triathalon next year!!
    Keep it up.
    Special eyes 4 ever....
  • Lets do some maths and see:

    Fat is approx 3500 kcal/pound

    So 1 stone of fat is 3500 * 14 kcal = 49,000 kcal

So to lose 1 stone in a year, you need to burn or not eat 49,000/365 kcals/day = 134kcal/day

    Calories in 1 mars bar = 264
Calories per mile on a bike 40 - 60 (roughtly)

So your weight loss is absolutely reasonable.

I too have experienced this once i started commuting to work on my bike, only 8.5 miles each way but takes about 35 minutes trough central London.

It's to the point where I'm down to a 32" waist (first time in 10 years) and the missus is telling me to stop trying to loose weight, thing is I'm not trying

+1 to this. After a disappointing summer fitness-wise I found myself a bit lardier than I would've liked. I realised that as well as not doing the miles I was making fairly regular trips to the coffee shop/vending machine and just cutting those out made a pretty quick impression on my waistline.
  • Sounds normal assuming you've no other symptoms ie if you are overly tired as well then I'd go to the doc but if your energy levels and vitality are the same then I wouldn't worry.
