Waterproofing a muvi/MD80 camera?

Just bought an MD80. Has anyone tried novel ways to waterproof these things using a balloon or something similar?

Looks like there's a proper waterproof case coming along, but its gonna be £40.
More problems but still living....

Some folk have used flexible plastic cases....TBH, I take mine off when it's raining. It films OK in rain whilst moving, but takes a while for any water to disperse from the lense when stationery. I use the silicone case to protect it from knocks though.

I'm resurrecting this one as I'd be really interested to know if anyone has come up with an ingenious DIY way of waterproofing this camera? I'm not likely to be buying the £40 case for a camera that's cos my £7 including shipping :P

  • Heard of clingfilm suggested before - never tried myself but might be worth a go? Also there is a waterproof case out there although believe it can be a bit fragile.

Failing that just wait till it gets sunny?

Mine stopped working after being caught in the rain so now I just take it off. Tesco sent me another one to my door for no charge for the second time. I wouldn`t waste any money on an expensive case, those cameras are junk really.

That looks pretty big, the MD80 isn't much bigger than an AA battery. I might give the clingfilm technique a go...

I've come up with a plan using 2 of these...

  • As I said in a previous post I have ten different spy cams and six of the ones you have and said "cling film".

The waterproof case for the Muvi MD80 does not fit the cheap clones without some modification on the internal ribs of the case. The clone is bigger, not much but enough, than the MD80. Clones are 56.3 x 21.4mm whereas the MD80 is 55.15 x 20.05 mm .
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Yeah I've come across a few reviews that say as much. Apparently you can make it fit with a minimal amount of filing, doesn't seem worth it for a £7 piece of knock-off Chinese junk...

Have you got one, if you did you would not call it junk, that is wat people said about Japanese items in the 60s, not buy a UK designed and built TV..............

It seems I have been mis-quoted. Having used 3 of these I can't complain about the quality of the camera, excellent results for the money. The only thing to be wary of is charging the battery, 3 hours max.

I dont think he (Mr Plum) meant they were rubbish I think he was refering to the very low throw away price of the product compared to the cost and time of modding a case.

Thanks for the battery info, i'm awaiting delivery of one of these.

Yeah this is what I meant...

I've got 1 of these and another one on order now and can't complain at all as the quality is impressive for the price. I can barely buy 2 pints of beer for the price of one of these, and to be honest, they are junk in terms of build quality and the components used, but still very impressive for the price.

I've come unstuck using disposable shot glasses as a waterproof case - the quality of the plastic is fairly low giving a slightly uneven surface which is pretty useless for a good image clarity. I'll have to think of something else...

  • As I said I use cling film and it is perfect, cheapest one too from Morrisons.

As for build quality, again, sorry but they are screwed together not glued which means you can even replace the battery, £1 from China!, not that you would want to, and remember there are some poor S&%S paying £30 in Maplin.

How do you replace the battery, please, mine is dying? Which battery do I need?

  • I just found them in passing when my son wanted a small battery and I ebayed small rechargeable battery, take the camera apart and look for a battery number.

Though at £7 for a new one why worry. Mine have not failed yet after a years almost daily use.

I got the original veho muvi from Tesco, the battery used to last 90 mins but it's rapidly dying and it's only a few months old. I might take it apart.

I sold all mine, the battery life was getting less and what with all my commuting in the dark, 50 % on unlit roads i was not going to get any decent footage as they were a bit cr*p in low light .

  • That is 100% the same camera that is £30 in Maplin and £7 from abroad, I now have 6.

So cheap I have them always covered in cling film and one pointing to the front and one to the rear on my helmets, secured simply by velcro.

Yes low light can be poor however it is improved in Pinnacle Studeo by increasing contrast and brightness.

It's not 100% the same, although they are overpriced. They are metal for a start, not plastic. They aren't much good on cloudy summer days either, when you are looking up and down.

  • All I can say is that the £7 ones are superb.

This is a cpy of a tewst, it has been reduced from 15Mb to just 1Mb and saved as the lowes resolution from Pinnacle Studio
