Which Pedals and Shoes to Get?

Hi Guys,

I apologise if this has been covered before but i had a look in some previous threads and just got confused further. Basically over Christmas im going to get some clip in peddles and shoes for my bike.

I think i have narrowed the pedals down to
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Shima ... 360011753/
or
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Shima ... 1862/#more

Has anybody got any opinion on whether the second one is worth the extra money?

When it comes to shoes i read that MTB shoes are actually nicer to walk in - is this true?
Would they fit the road pedals?

Anyway the Shoes are either
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/dhb_R ... 2950/#more
or
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/dhb_M ... 360033176/

I understand they would both fit the pedals - correct?

Anyway im pretty confused and would appreciate any help

mtb, 2 hole shoes, won't fit road pedals

the A530 pedals are great if you will need to clip in and out a lot, eg in built up areas.
and though called single sided, the flat side is great in towns or with trainers on for a 5 min spin to the shops. I've also used them on rides up to 100 miles and they are fine. Would recommend SH56 cleats over SH51, easier to get out of in a panic

proper road pedals are supposed to be better, but I've not tried them

if you're a general cyclist then spuds and mtb shoes are the easiest option.

go for double-sided spuds, such as the PD-M520s or 540s

and a decent MTB shoe, such as Shimano, Specialized, Sidi etc.

Set the release tension low to begin with, to help you learn. Then increase it as you get confident.

Road pedals offer possible/potential benefits but are harder to walk in and not as easy to use. Everyone will have an opinion on this. Do a search, there are plenty of discussions on this.

Don't mean to throw another option in just to add confusion, but I was in the same predicament a few months ago.

After doing some research I ended up with Crank Bros Eggbeaters (SLs, but there are lots to choose from) and Shimano MTB shoes.

For me, it turned out to be a great solution for someone new to clipless pedals. Theyr'e light, have worked fantasticallly so far and with shoes that I can walk in off the bike.

They're simple to set up (i.e. just put them on - there's no adjustment options except cleat position) and releasing is easier than I thought it would be (just a few tumbles as a newbie).

Compared to friends who went for full road pedal/shoe combos, I think I got a good compromise of practicality and functionality.

As maddog says, there are plenty of threads on here with lots of suggestions too.

Eggbeaters have a mixed rep though. Many grumble about bent axles and dodgy bearings. Never used them myself though.

The 520s are the cheap, bullet-proof choice IMO.

    Cheers Guys

Im afraid Eggbeaters are bit expensive so ill think ill stick to traditional stuff

Sorry if im coming across as completely stupid but you are saying that:
    These pedals
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Shima ... 1862/#more
    won't work with these shoes
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/dhb_M ... 360033176/

    Maddog 2

    You suggest
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Shima ... 8792/#more
And they would work with these
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/dhb_M ... 360033176/

Im confused as both peddles say they use the same cleat system SH-51so shouldn't they both work with the same shoe?

Also these peddles come with the cleats built in right? No need to buy any?

Once again i apologise but im relatively new to cycling (this year really) and just keep on getting confused by conflicting information

    Thanks Again

the 530s are spud pedals (single sided) and will work with mtb shoes, like the dhb M1 you suggest

the 520s are the double-sided versions and thus will also work with the M1s

    pedals come with cleats, yes.

Don't buy shoes off the interweb if you don't know what you want or whether they will fit, get them from a old school shop. Plus if you take along the pedals they'll be able to advise on which shoes will accept the correct cleats.

Pedals will come with the cleats, which you then need to bolt to the soles of the shoe.

Shimano pedals such as the 520s listed above should be fine for beginners.

I think im finally getting my head round things - good spot on merlincycles also...

Yeah thats a good point Eh

I think ill order the peddles then take to my local shop - just thought id save quite a bit buying online - but comfort should come first

  • those pedals would work with those shoes, but not with the first pedals in your first post

in shimano land you've got mtb types, SPD's which use two bolt cleats, eg SH51 orSH56
    and
    road types, SPD-SL, three bolt

shoes accept two or three bolt cleats, some accept both

cleats normally come with the pedals

    i think

someone who knows might come along soon and talk about float

save youself a lot of bother, get the A530's, sh56 cleats and any mtb type shoes that take your fancy. mind you most of them have a mesh front, so at this time of year you may as well gan oot in your bear feet, but thats another topic
