Sram shifter and Shimano front mech...

Hi,
Heard different things about this so I'm just asking, but can you use Sram shifters (X.4) with a Shimano front mech (Acera-X (from around '98 ))?
I know about the Actuation rate that Sram uses with their rear mechs and that Shimano uses indexing, but I've not heard anything like this about front mechs.
I'm just planning to upgrade the drivetrain and am wondering if the front mech will need changing as well.
Thanks,
Joe
