I am looking to start a "budget concious" hardtail build over the winter and wondered what the general feelings were on the on-one inbred and scandal frames.I have never had a steel framed mtb but heard the inbred model was really good for the money.Do you have to worry about corrosion...what other frames to be looking at sub £200..?
Cheers

just bought an on-one myself but not built up yet. Heard some great reviews about the sintesi 707 from Merlin (£80) or their own Malt frames...0

what kind of riding?
Hansom Dog Talisman is shockingly good vfmEverything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer
If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day0 -
I have a ScandAl and love it to bits. Great versatility with the sliding dropout for if you want to go single speed in the future. Very cross country orientated and only really suitable for a 4 inch fork. My brother has a 456 which is good for a 4, 5 or 6 inch fork for if you want to do a bit more trail type riding. He uses it with a 4 inch fork and he loves it too. Can't believe the value of the things either.
I would really recomend them and according to their website, they are going carbon next year (although that won't really suit a budget build).0 -

just basic non technical trail riding and hacking to the shops on now & then.0 -
One of my mates has just built an Inbred as his winter hacker and he loves it! So much so that he's thinking of selling his carbon Rocky Mountain RSL Team and racing the Inbred instead next year! Incredible value for money!0

If it helps at all I have an old on one (the original 80mm) and I think its an abomination - a truly awful waste of steel that could have been used to make a gun to shoot its designer through the head.
When you consider the other options around the only possible reason to chose on one is because you are cheap. Sorry. My 2p.Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0 -
The Handsome Dog is a great value frame.0

I had a Scandal which I liked a lot- it weighs as much as a beer can, but despite being an alloy frame it had a nice compliant rear end, doesn't fit the ally stereotype at all. I think it's a much better choice than the Inbred, since it has the same geometry and basically all the benefits, and weighs a good chunk less. Though it's more expensive of course.
Only thing I'd say is that even though it's designed to be able to handle a 130mm fork, it's not very nice with over 110mm in it, it rides a bit pissed. It just feels to me like any other 100mm frame with too much fork in it- just because it's warrantied for it doesn't mean it works well. But at 100mm, it was great, good enough that I rather want another
The deciding factor should be the fork you want to use here, I think, the 456 might be a little heavier but it's far more suited to a longer fork.Uncompromising extremist0 -
the Inbred is sweet!
Amazing finish, welds etc for the price.
And its not that heavy!
i've built mine up cheaply to weigh about 26lbs, need to get out in it now for a test ride0 -
All terrain cycles have the handsome Dog talisman for £59.98 for those interested....Giant Anthem X3 20130
