Vague feeling of steering stiffness

Just went for the first ride on a new bike. Halfway through I started to experience a vague feeling that the steering wasn't quite as free as it was - it almost felt like being stuck in a mud rut.
I stopped and twisted the bars left and right and all seems fine - no noise and seem free enough.
Still the perception is there - just like the headset prefers to be straight ahead...
Hard to explain... likely to be too tight headset? or something else?
