I've just totalled my front rim, severely buckled, ripped the ends of the nipples clean off three spokes so I'm in the market for a new rim. The current (totalled) one is a WTB Laser Disc Trail, I think I'd like something a bit stronger, not too bothered about weight but don't want anything crazy heavy. Also I'd like to upgrade my spokes to something a bit stronger, don't know what they are at the moment.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

what's your budget and what will you be using them for?
also for spokes check out the dtswiss competition.

I'm rolling on Mavic EN521's at the moment. Awesome weight/strength balance for AM type riding. DT Swiss make about the best spokes IMHO, but it's just as important they're built right.

Trails mainly, a few drops and jumps, nothing massive, I'm a heavy rider though, both in style and weight so need something strong, perhaps even downhilly. Budget? None really.
  • Stans flow on slx or hope hubs from merlin with dt competition spokes.

Light, strong and awesome. The build is almost more important than the parts, my handbuilt road wheels have taken a lot more abuse than the poorly laced heavy wide wheels on my jump bike (hence i rebuilt them as well!)
  • I go for Mavic 729's they're stupidly strong and not mega weighty, laced onto hope pro 2 hubs with DT revolution spokes and Ti nipples!!

Im a bigger rider too and haven't managed to ding one yet!! (3 years and counting tho!!!)

Thanks. I was looking at the 729s. Think I'll give them a go.
