Have I made a boo-boo (disk Brakes)

Just building up my bike from parts (Based around Kona Caldera frame, built for trails, mucking about, a bit of jumping, basically to be used a bit harder than a normal xc bike) I went for a 203mm disk at the front and a 180mm at the back, only thing I've noticed is not many people seem to run them as large as this. I do like a good set of brakes, I just want to know if it will give me any problems? I'll be using the new XT servo wave levers with XT calipers.
Only asking as it's not too late to change the order!

Many thanks Paul

  • Bit overkill IMO.
I use 160mm both ends,at a push might use a 180mm on the front. For the use you describe 180 front 160 rear would be plenty.

    perhaps overkill but meh.

Servowave give good modulation so they shouldn't get too bitey. I'd check the max disc size on the fork you have to make sure they certify it for 200mm and a 200 disc weighs more than a 160/180 but aside from that and looking like you have a dinner plate strapped to your front wheel, should be OK
Everything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day

I've emailed them and asked them to change it for a 180mm, I had this horrible moment last night, I woke up in the middle of the night and thought b*gger what have I done!
As fun as it is locking up the front wheel....

it wont give any problems, unless your fork aint happy about it. but it will give mental power, a good thing i would say, maybe a bit of overkill, and more heavy. but...... i wouldnt bother changing.
    I like bikes and stuff

depends how heavy you are. if you weigh the same as a dry noodle 160,s will be fine but if your carrying 14plus stones the bigger discs will be fine.

as you have not mentioned any thing about the bike/fork it is hard to say.

But if sounds fine for a FR/DH bike too much for an XC bike.
