Hi everyone,
I have a ski chalet in Morzine,in the town at the foot of the col de joux plane and the tour de france often goes right past us , this year it is going past the house on the way up to avoriaz on the 11th july, followed by a rest day in the town and then the tour departs Morzine on the 13th july.
The plan is for 3 of us to cycle from our house in Monmouthshire to Morzine and then stay for 4 days to enjoy the tour and leave the bikes there and fly back, i'll bring the bkes back on the car after the summer.
We will cycle from home down to Portsmouth and then get the ferry to caen and loop down through Orleans ,west of Paris and underneath paris to avoid it,has anyone got any suggestios for a route as we have probably 6-7 days max to make it to morzine. We can get from here to portsmouth in one day and from Caen to Morzine is about 550 miles so we were hoping to do it in 5 days, we will stay in chambre d'hotes or hotels en route, should we plan meticulously and book in advance or take each day as it comes ?
the other unknown is the fitness side of things ,we have all done the etape in the past and several sportives in the uk such as the dragon ride so can tackle 100+mile days with some serious climbing but of course this wasn't on fully loaded bikes and each 100miler was a one off and none of us have done 6-7 successive century rides. any thoughts on route/planning and training greatfully received

Booking in advance depends a bit on where you're going - July is peak holiday season so tourist destinations are likely to be busy. Other places may well be quieter though.

110 miles a day sounds like a lot to me. There are some people who can do that sort of mileage but they do a lot of touring.

Can't really advise on the cycling part of your trip but if you're after cheap and cheerful accomodation you can try Hotel F1.

We stayed in a few last year on the way down to Mont Ventoux and they were fine. Good thing is we were able to cancel our reservation really late on, even on the day of arrival i think (check the website for this).

Not sure if they would have storage for your bikes though, you'd have to check with them.
