I assume as this is on the home page, most of you have seen this ?

http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/twitter-inspires-i-pay-road-tax-cycling-jersey-24023

So what do you think ? I think that I want one, but it looks like it's only going to be available in club order quantities for the time being. But here's my question; Do you think it'll be at all antagonistic to the Imprezza and white van brigade ?

Any Imprezza or white van drivers on here, that generalisation doesn't include you

Cheers......... Matt

  • i wouldn't wear one, because it's too high brow for your average WVM etc.

I would wear one saying: How's the congestion?
  • The antagonistic folks are there already. I say go for it I think I will.

surely all they will say is....that is not a valid tax disc?

I quite like it.....but I reckon its only cyclists that will appreciate it.

    Nice thought, but...
...as a cyclist, you don't pay road tax. So I think it's more likely to antagonise the WVM into the panto argument of "Oh no you don't".

...possibly better to have a "I am a vehicle and have a right to be on the road" (doesn't scan so well, admittedly).

No one pays road tax. That's kind of the point.

You pay tax, you contribute towards the roads.

  • Rather than concentrating on the 'I pay road tax on the car or cars I own' it should point out that a bicycle would be a zero emission vehiclefor VED purposes so even if we paid it would be £0.

The American "Share the Road" seems a better approach. Education is the key.

That, and a smack in the eye for the idiot that knocks you off. Another form of education I guess.

You don't need one!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is the license you need to use a MOTORISED vehicle on the public highway. Road tax was abolished in 1936

There is also the problem that the average WVM may think you ride for Team DVLA and so make an extra effort to mow you down. :?

    Yawn.......
  • No-one pays road tax, it doesn't exist. Motor vehicles pay Vehicle Excise Duty. Most roads are maintained by councils (funded by council tax and central government), motorways and some trunk roads are built and maintained by the highways agency (funded by central government) Same applies to things like road signs, traffic lights, gritting etc. Policing the roads, such as it is- also funded by central government. Contrary to most motorists assumptions, the real cost of building, maintaining and policing the roads far exceeds any tax revenue from motorists. If you factor in 'external costs' like lives lost, the road system is very uneconomic. 3,000+ people killed every year at £1m each is over £3bn.
In a sane world, alternatives like walking, cycling or going by train would be made more attractive/ cheaper, but for this to happen requires a sea change in government thinking. Jonathon Porrit, who resigned as 'green' advisor to the government reckoned the Department for Transport was the worst government department of all- it's hard to imagine just how bad it must be to earn that title. Or quite easy to imagine if you're a cyclist, pedestrian or rail passenger. The looming oil crisis will expose Britain's failed transport 'policy' even more- over-reliance on road transport, airport expansion, lack of railway electrification mean rising oil prices will hit the UK transport system harder than most.

rant over... I feel better now.

I'd get a jersey printed with my tax return printed on it - just to prove to the average WVM that I probably pay more tax than he earns and therefore have made a greater contribution to the upkeep of the highway than he has! :D

Will the jersey be stylish and have matching gloves, armwarmers etc ?

No point otherwise, gotta have some style over substance.

But it's got nothing to do with the roads.

That's the point. A person who is paid highly, pays more tax but doesn't run a car probably contributes more to the roads that motorists.

That's the issue is people think they're making some magic contribution to the roads which they're just not. Their VED might be used on the roads, might be used for a hospital, might be used for a ridiculous war.

Agreed. However 99% of people will call the VED disc in their car, their "tax disc" and as the jersey is a "I pay road tax" jersey, with a picture of a VED disc, it will confuse the average motorist. Not to mention the dischord it's caused here, between the very people it's supposed to assist.

    Nice idea. But pants.

DVLA call it a TAX DISC too....

    From their web site;
    Welcome
to the DVLA's vehicle online services

You can apply for a new tax disc or, if you intend to take the vehicle off the road,
declare Statutory Off Road Notification, known as SORN, directly over the internet.

It is a tax disc though - a disc proving you have paid the excise duty (tax) for your vehicle. But it isn't road tax!
  • Well it's a "window tax" isn't it? An excuse for a general levy, just like ownership of a television or a house, and one of the myriad of revenue streams that fills the tax coffers of the government. "Road tax" is just a piece of colloqiual shorthand -- only autistic pedants debate the accuracy of the phrase.
  • I would wear one saying: How's the congestion?
Quite like that one. I note that various colleagues who voted against the Manchester congestion charge have recently started cycling to work and are moaning about the numbers of cars on the road. Doh...
