Winter Tights

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any advice as to which pair of winter tights seem to the best buy.

I was looking at getting some that are pretty warm and reasonably waterproof.

I know that Endura Stealth are as waterproof as you can probably get, but they are made from heavy wetsuit type material so wasn't too keen.

Gore do a few that are water repellant but I'm still not sure which ones would do the best job.

All advice gratefully accepted :D

I'm not that up on my cycling brands but who are "SPEG"? is this some made up brand like "Armanici" or "Hugo Bosse".. There was a link to some Karrimor stuff at sports direct a while back..

I bought some lidl no brand snowboarding/mcycle thermals and sox and they are very toasty under my shorts.
  • speg do a lot more mainly roady orientated kit, i'd not heard of them before but when i got my winter tights they were a tenner so want too worried!

 Now we know the branding of the spidy-suit. I thought it would have been custom made and have protective properties vs. bullets etc. :P

Do tights really make that much difference to your body temperature? Mind you, I am a human furnace so more clothing is very bad idea for me personally.

Another vote for dhb merston, cheap and comfy.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Endura thermolite tights are water repellent and can be had for about £40.

    Hi all,
I was looking at getting some that are pretty warm and reasonably waterproof.

I know that Endura Stealth are as waterproof as you can probably get, but they are made from heavy wetsuit type material so wasn't too keen.

i bought these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=18080 awhile back. they arent exactly heavy & the all the seams are sealed because they are waterproof they would have to be a bit stiff. they work the best in cold heavy rain. fleece covering on the inside is quite comfortable with bib shorts tho if you are bit of a stick man like me the shins will get a bit cold in blustery wind. only get a wee bit damp on the inside so id recommend them. went for the medium size so it wouldnt be too tight tho if you can try them on 1st before buying. http://www.thewashingmachinepost.net/endura/endura.html
  • Thanks for the info everyone.

Still not sure about the endura stealths, I tried some on last week but found them to be a bit restrictive, although was advised that these were the best for really wet weather.

I was thinking about the endura thermolites as I understand that they are water repellant and also at a great price compared with gore.

I guess it's a choice between totally waterproof with the stealths and somewhere near with the thermolites or similar.

Thanks for all your help, I'll be making a purchase soon, especially as the weather has well and truly turned now.

just wear fleece lined normal bib tights such as the dhb merstons and get wet much more fun than getting exspensive waterproof, movement restricting tights and recking them in the mud. or if your a bit of a wuss and find that you get cold easily when wearing wet through clothing then just wear shorts they'll save your wife/girlfriend more washing and water drains off pretty easinly.

last week i went out on my bike for 3 hours after there had been 2 inches of rain and most parts of my local woods were flooded i was only wearing my dhb merstons, baselayer+jersey and a waterproof jacket and i wasn't cold at all. this may have been something to do with the fact that i was riding at a very high effort rate and the only time i was cold was when i had to strip off outside and hose down before i was allowed in the house. :D
so just get urself some regular fleece lined tights and ride harder you'll have the best winter in years.
it's what i did and i look forward to rides in the rain more than in the dry. :D:D:D:D:D

    That's a bit whimpish

I was out Saturday when my woods were deep in water for 3 1/4 hours while it was tipping it down.

All I had on was a short sleeve top, Montane featherlite and Earnley tights non of that mamsy fleecy stuff.:lol:

+1 for these. Keep a reasonable amount of rain off and nicely warm (too warm for the weather at the moment!)

  • Nice one, Thanks everyone, I've actually gone for the endura thermolites.

    Hopefully here before the weekend!

Altura Windstopper ones are pretty water repellant, as are the Demarchi contorPro windproof. Found both nice and toasty. Think you would get pretty hot in full on waterproof ones.
